Spending long periods of time in the sun can fade your clothes. Many dyes are sensitive to prolonged sunlight and even to a light left on in the closet. For more fashion care tips, click here. |

Who wouldn’t want to buy designer clothing at one-third or less of normal retail prices? Many women in Omaha have been doing just that for the more than 30 years at Esther’s, a woman’s designer and fine clothing consignment store at 805 ½ S. 75th St. The family-owned business started in the basement of Esther Lonergan’s home in the early 1970s as a way to sell designer clothing passed down from her sister who worked for New York designer Bill Blass. “The clothing was just too high fashion for my sister and me so my mother would invite friends to come over to look at it and it just grew from there,” says daughter Trish Lonergan, who assumed management of the business when her mother passed away in December of 2008. As the designer consignment concept began to catch on, other women began bringing Esther their gently-worn designer clothing to sell. Eventually Esther’s home-spun business grew too large for her basement so she moved the business to its current location in the mid 1980s. Today, the store enjoys a dedicated clientele of regular customers, many of whom have visited the store since the early days of the business. “My mother had great style and a dedicated following of friends and customers,” says Trish. “She always had such a great rapport with her customers. She was the driving force behind the business for all these years.” Esther’s accepts high-quality, clean, gently used clothing, shoes, jewelry and accessories for a three-month consignment. “We only take good quality, good labels and current styles,” says Trish. Wardrobe items must be dropped off by appointment only. The store is open Monday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. When there’s a problem or clothing items need to be freshened up Trish says she brings them to Fashion Cleaners. “Fashion Cleaners’ service is excellent,” says Trish. “Designer clothing often needs special treatment and Fashion Cleaners always pays attention to details. And their driver Bob always calls when there’s a question or concern.” |
