| Work to Home: Make it a Smooth Cruise
Do you go straight from the hectic pace at work to an even more crazy pace at home? When my kids were young, we used to call it the "witching hour." And, as much as I hate to admit it, I was the witch!
Even if you don't have cranky, hungry kids waiting to be fed, you may be the cranky or hungry one. Here are some tips to smooth your transition from work to home.
- Don't starve yourself - have a piece of fruit, a baggie of nuts, or a
protein bar to eat on the drive home. If you're picking up kids at daycare, make sure you have a snack for them too. - Use music - Depending on what you need, have a selection of energizing or calming music in the car to listen to on the home. News will probably stress you out so turn off the radio and play a soothing tune.
- Take your time - Instead of rushing into the house when you park your car or pull into the garage, take a few moments to breathe and stretch. Turn the engine off and take four or five deep breaths. Step outside the car and stretch out your back, shoulders, and neck before loading yourself up with things to take inside.
- Change your clothes - Be sure to put on comfy clothes first thing upon arriving home. Wash your face and even brush your teeth to start the next part of your day/evening.
- Go outside - If the weather and evening activities cooperate, spend ten minutes or so outside. If you feel like relaxing, sit with a drink of your choice. If you need energizing, take a quick ten minute walk.
- Power nap - As long as it doesn't interfere with your overnight sleeping, a ten minute nap may be the right transition for you. Set an alarm (and don't ignore it when it goes off). Even if you don't fall asleep, relaxing will enable you to have the energy to do what you have to do.
Self care is a combination of little things that we often don't take the time to do!
