Enable Your Happiness
During my career as a professional speaker, I spoke on many topics including happiness. One of the researchers I particularly liked was David G. Myers, Ph.D. His book The Pursuit of Happiness outlines the things in life that enable happiness.
As you ponder your goals or intentions for the coming year, you may want to explore the following characteristics of happy people. If one of your goals is to be happier then these may give you a framework on which to plan. - A fit and healthy body
- Realistic goals and expectations
- Positive self-esteem
- Feelings of control
- Optimism
- Outgoingness
- Supportive friendships that enable companionship and confiding
- A social intimate, sexually warm, equitable partnership
- Challenging work and active leisure, punctuated by adequate rest and retreat
- A faith that entails communal support, purpose, acceptance, outward focus, and hope
I'm not suggesting that you tackle all of these. Choosing one or two as a focus for the coming year is a more do'able undertaking! Self care can be an intention, process, and a goal.
