Habits: The Good, Bad, and Unhealthy

Why is it that when we are at our unhappiest many of us  do something unhealthy rather than take better care of ourselves?

Part Three: The Unhealthy (formerly the Ugly)

I'm not talking bad here, I'm talking really unhealthy self-medicating with alcohol, drugs, shopping, gambling, binging, or unsafe sex. Sometimes this high risk behavior is transient but with certain people it may become an addiction.

If you, a loved one, or friend have been treating your unhappiness with unhealthy behaviors, you know how hard it is to break this kind of habit. A first step is to understand the process of change.

I learned about the Stages of Change model while doing an internship at the Kansas City Free Health Clinic (a phenomenal resource in our area that everyone should know about). The model helped me make sense of why it is so hard to change and the path we can take to positive change.
