Habits: The Good, Bad, and Ugly

Why is it so hard to break a habit that we feel is not good for us?

Part Two: The Bad

For many of us, when we want to break a bad habit, we treat it as an all or nothing endeavor. We go cold turkey; oftentimes not considering why we developed the habit in the first place.

Example: If you find yourself not able to stop after one piece of chocolate, examine what else that chocolate is providing you. Besides delicious taste, many people use chocolate to soothe an unpleasant emotion.

Solution: Enjoy one piece of chocolate and then find some other way to nurture yourself: a short phone call to a good friend, a luxurious bath, or maybe even a quick nap.

This strategy helped me quit smoking, after many unsuccessful attempts, almost 35 years ago. I have used it many times since to break other habits that were not serving me well.
