Leadership Macomb XIII
Justice System Day
Justice System Day was held on April 21st. O'Reilly Rancilio, PC sponsored the day. The objectives for the day were to learn about the court systems and how they operate in Macomb County and to gain insight on the criminal justice system and its implementation in Macomb County.
The participants met at the Macomb County Circuit Court. The day started with Honorables' Sebastian Lucido, Mark Switalski, and David Viviano (pictured right) giving a fantastic discussion of our Judiciary System . Honorable Viviano informed the participants on jury reform measures taking place in Lansing. William Cataldo, Macomb County Prosecutor's Office, Chief of Homicide and Brian Legghio, Defense Attorney, continued with a lively conversation on the Criminal Justice System. The morning concluded with Sue Coats, CEO, Turning Ponte , Cathy Gordon, Program Director, Carehouse , and Craig Pappas, Executive Director, The Resolution Center, discussing victims advocacy and alternative resolutions.
After lunch, the afternoon session began with a tour of the Macomb County Jail. Sheriff Mark Hackel graciously allowed the participants behind the scene access to jail operations. The day ended with a tour of the Juvenile Justice Center with Charles Seidelman, Director.
LM would like to thank our sponsor, O'Reilly Rancilio, PC; Honorable David Viviano for the use of his court room during our morning sessions; our committee members, and presenters for putting on an exciting, informative, and successful program session!

Susan Scheurer - LM XIII
When Susan Scheurer divorced in 1991, she never dreamed that she'd eventually become a relationship expert of sorts. Fast forward to May 2010 where Susan eagerly awaits the release of her first book, "Dating - Get It Right, Jack and Jane!" a kind of "how to" or "how not to" date book. Susan explains, "I've been single a long time. About two and a half years ago I met Angela Grammatico, my writing partner. We were sitting in a bar one day and it was obvious that there were a lot of singles there. We noticed men were walking right by women, many of them probably unaware of what to do or how to start a conversation. That's when it hit me! I wanted to find a way to help educate people on the
complexities of dating." So, Susan (and Angela) decided to write the book, which is more of a guide, tailored to both men and women. It is 142 pages and covers a variety of topics including what to wear, what to expect on a first date, warning signs of potentially abusive relationships...all practical information that can help individuals make better decisions.
Susan is a member of this year's Leadership Macomb class. Besides being an author, Susan works for McCausey Lumber and is on the Board of "All The World's A Stage', and also is an actress in many of their productions. She says Leadership Macomb has been "a real eye opener." Her favorite part has been the education that she's received about Macomb County, the knowledge she's gained from the experience and the camaraderie of fellow Leadership Macomb participants.
What's Susan planning to do next? "I am an advocate for Women", she says. "My passion is to work with women, especially those from abused or broken relationships. I want to help women build their self-esteem, let them know it's ok to be independent and educate them on how to live a better life."
The book is targeted to be released in early June and will be available on Amazon.com or by clicking www.getitrightjackandjane.com.And by the way...Susan promises to give Leadership Macomb a shout out if the book lands her on the Oprah show! We'll keep our fingers crossed! |
