Leadership Macomb XIII
Leadership Day
Leadership Day took place on February 17th at Selfridge Air National Guard Base. Community Central Bank and Plant & Moran, PLLC sponsored the day. The objectives for the day were to gain a better understanding of the general principles of "crucial conversations" and being an "influencer"; to learn from and network with individuals in leadership positions in Macomb County and to dialogue with county leaders about how we can use "crucial conversations" and "influence" in effecting positive change in Macomb County.
Jessica Stone with United Way of Southeastern Michigan started the day informing the participants of the many resources available from the United Way and ways in which they can help. Doug Finton (picture left), Managing Director, Vital Skills International, followed by introducing the participants to "crucial conversations' and "the power of influence", skills that will help them become better leaders in their places of business.
The afternoon session brought together a fantastic panel that included a diverse group of area leaders. John Nitz, President, Leadership Macomb Board, facilitated the panel discussion. Panel members included Sheriff Mark Hackel, Macomb County Sheriff's Office, Don Torline, President, Baker College, Barbara Rossmann, President & CEO, Henry Ford Macomb Hospitals, and Wayne Oehmke, President, Sterling Heights Regional Chamber of Commerce & Industry. The panel discussed very openly about what it takes to be an effective leader. After the discussion, the participants broke out into small groups and had table time with each of the panel members. This allowed for some dynamic dialogue.
Dr. Al Lorenzo, President Emeritus, Macomb Community College, Executive in Residence, Oakland University, concluded our day with a lively discussion of "Lessons From Life", Personal Perspectives on Leadership.
LM would like to thank the program day's sponsors, Community Central Bank and Plante & Moran, PLLC; our host site, Selfridge ANGB; and as well as our presenters and panel members for putting on an exciting, informative, and successful program session!
Business, Manufacturing and Technology Day is planned for March 17th. |
Alumni Corner...
Farewell, but not Goodbye
Joel Gibson - LM IV
March 31st will be a big day for Joel Gibson. On that day, he will be leaving his job as Vice President of Human Resources and Organizational Development for Henry Ford Macomb Hospitals, after nearly 12 years in that role. Joel is not retiring - rather he is transitioning his life to focus on his true love and gift...music. Joel is a professional musician and vocalist and has recorded and performed with many established R & B, pop, and jazz artists.
Joel received his B.S. in Operations Research and Management Science and his MBA in Organizational Development from the University of Detroit. After graduation, Joel served in a variety of roles with BCBSM before taking on the Vice President role with St. Joseph Healthcare (now Henry Ford Macomb Hospitals).
Joel graduated from LM VI in 2001, and was appointed to the Leadership Macomb Board in 2003. He has served on the Board ever since then. He will be stepping down from the Board effective March 31st, but will stay involved with Leadership Macomb. He has been and will continue to be the driving force in planning "Our Neighbor's Day".
A few years ago, Joel was interviewed for an article in the University of Detroit Mercy alumni newsletter. When asked what advice Joel would give to today's business student, Joel responded: "Know yourself, know your business. Integrity is paramount; respect is earned by always respecting others. Ego and sense of self are necessary; however, inflated egos kill both careers and relationships. Give your time and money to organizations and individuals in need. Initiate constant introspection and constantly assess your values to ensure that they are inclusive, pure, and truly supportive of humankind."
Talk about "walking the talk" - Joel lived this advice daily. Leadership Macomb values him greatly and will miss his presence on our Board. We are, however, truly grateful that he will continue to participate on Program Council and we wish him the very best in his next venture.
