Leadership Macomb XIII
Education & Workforce Development Day
The fifth session of LM XIII was held on December 16, 2009. The topic was Education & Workforce Development Day. Baker College, Northwood University, Oakland University, and Davenport University sponsored the day. The class met at Warren Consolidated School's (WCS) Career Prep Center in Sterling Heights. The participates enjoyed a hearty breakfast prepared for them by the students of the CPC culinary staff. Matt Bennett, Director of Admissions, Adult Degree Program, DeVos Graduate School, Northwood University started the day with an engaging discussion on Education & Workforce Development "Journey to Success". The participates were then taken on a tour of the Career Prep Center with Frank Antonucci, Principal, WCS Career Prep Center; and Grant Syswerda, Assistant Principal, WCS Career Prep Center.

The second part of the morning was spent at the Macomb Intermediate School District (MISD). A "Walk & Talk" of the MISD was given by the ISD Consultants. Next, A K-12 overview was discussed with Dr. Judith Pritchett, Chief Academic Officer, MISD. Kathleen Kropf then followed with a conservation of the "Education of the Homeless". The morning ended with a discussion from Ed Stanton, Director of Secondary Outreach, Macomb Community College on the topic of "Dual Enrollment/Community College/Achieving the Dream".
The afternoon session was kicked off with Dr. Al Lorenzo (picture right), Executive in Residence, Oakland University-Macomb discussing "Higher Education". Dr. Hannah Worley, Management Training Facilitator, MISD, concluded the discussions with a conversation on Senior Education. The group then participated in a "Citizen Action Group" assignment with Julie Dichtel, Director, Oakland University.
For the assignment, the class was grouped into five ad-hoc "Citizen Action Groups". The groups consisted of: Homeless Education, Community College/Duel Enrollment, Higher Education/Workforce Development, K-12 Education, and Senior Education. Each group had to prepare a 5-8 minute presentation to promote, fix, change, or market their service. Some groups did role play, ran a commission group, held a panel discussion, played a game show, and even produced a TV commercial. A small token of appreciation was given to them by Leadership Macomb.
