Tobacco use is the single greatest cause of disease and premature death in our nation. Thanks again for helping us educate health professions students and health care providers on the latest guidelines regarding tobacco, and for referring tobacco users to our cessation services. As always, please let us know how we can assist in your efforts to improve the health of underserved communities.

Gulfcoast South AHEC: Shaping my Future as a Health Professional

By: Taylor McMahon, 8th grader, Heron Creek Middle, North Port

The REACH program has given me the opportunity to explore all the different health care occupations. I have gained knowledge through games, in-services and guest speakers on health careers I didn't even know existed.

When I went to the very first informational meeting I knew I wanted an education and career in the medical field. I was already exploring the opportunity to become an Anesthesiologist. I was so excited after the first meeting. I knew it was my calling to start a health club at Heron Creek Middle School so that other students could have the chance to know that health careers are not just Doctors, Nurses and Surgeons.

On our second monthly meeting we had a guest speaker with experience in Neonatal Intensive Care. After hearing her miraculous stories and her love for her profession, I decided that I wanted to work with babies that had an early start or little chance of survival. I wanted a career that would be fulfilling, where I could change their outcome and make a difference in their future. I have now learned of the requirements it takes to become a neonatologist and I look forward to achieving my goals and working as a health care professional.

Health Careers Summer Camps 2012

Gulfcoast South AHEC offers funding to community-based youth serving organizations to develop and implement Health Careers Summer Camps in Charlotte, DeSoto, Manatee, and Sarasota counties. An essential component of our youth programs involves the recruitment of students from underserved, rural, and inner-city communities and underrepresented populations into primary care health fields, including medicine, nursing, and other health professions. The purpose of the summer camps is to expose middle and high school students to health careers, assist them in establishing a career in health, and encourage them to work in underserved areas.

The following organizations have been awarded funding for Health Careers Summer Camps 2012:  Educational Consultants Consortium, Girls Incorporated of Sarasota County, Jewish Family & Children's Service of Sarasota-Manatee, Laurel Civic Association, Macedonia Human Services Cultural Training Center, Sarasota Y, South County Family YMCA, and Truvine Missionary Baptist Church.

For camp dates and contact information, please view our Health Careers Summer Camps webpage.
