What Can You Do in 3 Minutes..
Over 2 million adult Floridians use tobacco; 70% of smokers say they want to quit. The U.S. Dept of HHS recommends that health care providers treat tobacco dependence in their practices. A minimal intervention lasting three minutes or less can have a significant impact on smoking cessation rates. Individual treatment outcomes can be improved if you Get with the Guidelines!
The intended audience includes physicians, physician assistants, nurses, nutritionists, dentists, dental hygienists, mental health and social workers, and other health care professionals. No prerequisite knowledge is required and there is no fee for this program. CEU's are offered for various professions. If you would like more information or to register for these programs, contact Charlene Chirillo, RN at (941) 361-6602 ext. 26 or email cchirill@health.usf.edu.

The Best New Year's Resolution You Will Ever Make (and Keep)
By: Karla Brody, MSSW
You've been trying to quit smoking on and off for years. You know you need to quit and you are tired of family members hassling you. You wonder if it's even possible...
The truth is most people can't quit smoking cold turkey. But your chance for success is significantly greater if you receive tobacco cessation services and medication, including over the counter nicotine replacement therapy, such as the nicotine patch. The good news is that both are available at no cost in your community.
Call toll free 877-848-6696 to receive information about tobacco cessation classes and groups. Tobacco cessation specialists at Gulfcoast South AHEC will assist and support you through a personalized quit program in as little as 2 hours or over the course of 6 weeks for those preferring a support group format. There is no better way to start out the New Year! |

GSAHEC Welcomes Maria Williams! Maria Williams is the most recent addition to Gulfcoast South AHEC. She holds a bachelor's degree in psychology and masters in public health from West Virginia University. Maria specializes in health intervention design and implementation with at risk communities. She was able to utilize those skills successfully in designing an obesity intervention program for Monongalia County schools that was later considered for statewide adoption in West Virginia and granted a CDC publication. She was also instrumental in developing a tobacco cessation program for pregnant women and women of childbearing age for the Mon County Health Department that saw great success. Maria is a native of Brazil. Her experience in her home country has inspired her interests in international healthcare issues and the hardships of developing communities. This was part of her driving force in helping to create the Belchior Foundation, a charitable aid program that worked alongside West Virginia University School of Medicine faculty and students to provide resources to underserved communities abroad. Maria also believes in the value of strengthening her local community by volunteering. She volunteered regularly as an instructor with the American Red Cross, Habitat for Humanity, and care provider with Morgantown, WV AIDS agencies, Caritas and Colligo House. She is now very grateful to have moved to Sarasota with her family and be able to continue her career with GSAHEC. Here she will be acting as the new Tobacco Training Coordinator. |
