New Exhibition: Futureproof
|
|

Victoria Baker: Mike Hunter: Katrina Johnk: Martin Scott Powell
'Futureproof' is an exhibition profiling the enigmatic work of 4 emerging image-makers whose work gravitates between, and plays upon, the genres of documentary and staged photography. Graduating in 2008 from 3 of Scotland's photography courses, Victoria Baker, Mike Hunter, Katrina Johnk and Martin Scott Powell (image pictured above) variously construct situations and narratives through the use of the figure in real and artificial environments, or in one case through its contrasting absence.
Further information and images are available by clicking here.
Exhibition runs from 1st November - 20th December 2008. Opening times: Wed - Sat, 12noon - 5pm
Artists' talks with Victoria Baker, Mike Hunter and Martin Scott Powell - Saturday 6th December - 3pm - Admission Free.
Futureproof is the last exhibition in the South Block space until we re-open in Trongate 103 in Spring of 2009. It is currently anticipated the building will open in September 2009.

The Jerwood Photography Awards
|
|
The recent Jerwood Photography Awards proved to be popular with visitors and critically significant with future image-makers, with several groups of students from photography courses across Glasgow visiting the gallery. A group of school pupils from Hutchieson's Grammar also
visited the exhibition as part of Street Levels education and outreach
programme in what was a lively and engaged event, facilitated by Rachel
Thibbotomunuwe. This piloted an approach to interpretation actitivies
that we will be pursuing and developing with the new programme in
Trongate 103.
Street Level is happy to accommodate such visits by colleges, students, schools or any other group. If you would like an introduction to our new exhibition (Futureproof, see above) or a gallery tour then please notify us in advance on 0141 552 2151 and we will endeavor to assist.
Sophie Gerrard and Dana Pope also undertook an informative discussion on their work.

Other Jerwood News As part of its education work Street Level consulted with the Trafficking Awareness Raising Alliance (TARA) in Glasgow, to give Dana Popa's work 'Not Natasha' a local context. Although Popa's work highlighted trafficked women in Eastern Europe, TARA's input demonstrated the problem also exists in Scotland right now. Thanks to all the team at TARA for their advice.
Also Green MSP Patrick Harvey gave Street Level a quote to use in the education material around Sophie Gerrards 'E-wasteland'. He said:
"Waste is a big problem for Scotland and the world, and getting worse. Around 85% of the waste we produce is just put in landfill, which is a polite way of describing a hole in the ground. This is where much of our electrical waste like old computers and game consoles end up. Landfill produces harmful gases, which cause climate change, and nasty chemicals that can leak into the soil and the marine environment, harming plants, animals and even human health. Our electrical waste is also shipped abroad to some of the poorest countries in the world, where people have to live beside and scrape a living from our waste, as the E-wasteland exhibition shows". Thanks to Patrick for his support.
Also used in the education pack was a document from the education resources section of United States Environmental Protection Agency website. Check out the download for the life cycle of a mobile phone.
