Multi-Story News

 Mothers of Purl: Over 100 people brought their knitting needles and crochet hooks to take part in the Mothers of Purl live knit-in as part of Refugee Week Scotland. The event included an indoor market place of crafted objects and wearable's and a few tunes from mibra musicians Tawona and Ernest Sithole. Burhan the Kurdish Barber was also on hand to rid guests of unsightly facial hair thanks to his 'threading' technique.
West End Parade: 10-foot foam replicas of the Red Road Towers rubbed shoulders with MSPs when they visited the Scottish Parliament for its annual Refugee Week reception. The towers, made by young people involved with Multi-Story also strutted their stuff at the West End Carnival Parade, where they seen by about 10,000 people.
Underground Posterworks: Clockwork
orange regulars may have noticed the Multi-Story Posterworks series at

This year 48 young people were involved in a weeklong creative programme provided by Trongate 103 organisations Street Level Photoworks, Glasgow Print Studio, Sharmanka Kinetic Theatre, Café Cossachok, Project Ability, and G-MAC. During our Print Trail and Shadow Fix workshops, participants were led through Sharmanka Kinetic Theatre, Glasgow Print Studio and Street Level Photoworks and made fantastic artworks, these included photo and screen prints of drawings, life size photograms using objects from Sharmanka, hands and toys and a giant wall based print, using projected shadows, shapes and figures. Over 1000 people saw this exhibition of new work by third year students in the department of fine art photography at The Glasgow School of Art. Presented at WASPS and supported by Street Level, it brought together 17 artists with diverse approaches and practices ranging from video, photography, drawing and installation. A limited edition catalogue was produced, a few of which are still available. Contact Street Level for more details.

New this month - blog entry on the exhibition 'Broadcast Yourself' currently on at Cornerhouse, Manchester. The exhibiton includes a selection of TV and web-based works which demonstrates how artists have successfully challenged dominant broadcast culture since the 1970s. Also a tribute to Nan Hoover (see event date below). Upcoming in August, 'Alt-W: New Directions in Scottish Digital Culture' curated by New Media Scotland at the CCA. Visit the website.

Louise Irwin, Development Manager at Street Level has been nominated for an award from PR Weekly for press work on the Think Differently Campaign for the National Autistic Society.
Welcome to new Board members: Allan Kelly (Business Development Manager, Scottish Power), Susan Breckenridge (Head of Art, Hutcheson Grammar), Andrea Kusel (Curator, Paisley Museum and Art Gallery), Keith Ingham (Photographer), and Cristina Armstrong (freelance arts consultant).
Board member Keith Ingham has a solo exhibition at Collins Gallery titled 'Urban Echoes' - it runs from 23 August - 27 September (closed 22 September).
On at Gallery of Modern Art is 'Self-Portraits' by Jo Spence until 16th November. The exhibition included rare examples of Spence's work and highlights several recent gifts to Glasgow Museums from the Jo Spence Memorial Archive. It's curator and life-long collaborator of Spence's, Terry Dennett, will give a talk on Thursday 21st August at 6.30pm at GoMA. For those who missed Street Level's curated exhibition 'Jo Spence Photographer: Works from the Archive' in August of 2005, then this is a must-see. Artists Talk, 17th September, 7.30 Myriam Thyes who exhibited at Street Level as part of Timeloop in April 07 is undertaking the Dusseldorf - Glasgow residency exchange coordinated by WASPS. She will give a talk on her noted project 'Flag Metamorphosis' at Goethe Institute, Glasgow.
Nan Hoover Tribute, 24th September, 7pm Born in New York, May 12, 1931 - died in Berlin, June 9, 2008. One of the most important international pioneers of video and performance art, Nan had recently exhibited, lectured and performed in Glasgow (at CCA, Glasgow School of Art, and National Review of Live Art).

Jerwood Photography Awards: These annual Awards are open to artists who work with the medium of photography. Applicants must be resident in the UK and have graduated from a visual arts degree course in the UK between January 2005 and September 2008. There is no age limit. Five winners will each receive an award of £2,500, an exhibition at Jerwood Space in London, and publication in Portfolio Magazine. Deadline is 11th August 2008. My Merchant City: a photographic competition for this year's Merchant City Festival which is run by UZ. Aimed at people who live or work in Glasgow's Merchant City, UZ are looking for photographs that reveal aspects of the Merchant City or present a personal take on the character or nature of the area. It is open to anyone, regardless of experience or camera format; however they require people to provide their entry as a print. The print is to be no smaller than 6in by 8ins and no larger than A3. The deadline for prints is Monday 1st September.
The photographs will be judged by a panel including representatives from the Merchant City Community Council and displayed during the Merchant City Festival (Thursday 25th to Sunday 28th September) within Merchant Square. The overall winning photographer will receive a complimentary framing service courtesy of Merchant Gate Gallery, 111 Saltmarket. Contact UZ for more info 0141 552 6027.
