Hi all!

Nancy has had an issue with my quail friends this summer - they have been munching away on her plants.  Thinking it was out of reach of the bunnies, she planted Bok Choy and Romaine along with flowers in the big pots in the old wagon. Wrong! The quail enjoyed everything and just left the stems when they were done.  After the third planting, she draped bird cloth over the plants in the wagon.

The very hot, dry weather has made vegetable gardening especially difficult this year. The beets, onions, and eggplants did well, but there were no tomatoes, pumpkins, or squash (usually in abundant supply) between the heat, the quail and the ground squirrels. Some zinnias and sunflowers survived and Nancy used them to brighten the rooms.  Near the porch, a mass of sunflower volunteers appeared. Later in the summer it almost felt like we are in a forest of sunflowers.  (I tell you, between the sunflowers and the mint around the porch, sometimes it's difficult to get up on the porch to get fed!)

Good News!

Tent Rocks National Monument, the Corrales Bosque Preserve, the
Sandia Mountain hiking trails and parts of Bandelier National Monument  have reopened for hiking and bird watching. They were closed temporarily  when the fire danger was high earlier in the summer.

Greetings!

Salinas Pueblo

Greetings,

During the past few weeks we have played "tourist" with friends and explored some beautiful parts of our state. We headed northwest and explored  back roads in the Jemez Mountains Trail, we visited the Ponderosa Winery,  saw a number of creatures who call the forest and meadows their home,  and picnicked  in the shade of huge ponderosa pines. Next we went southeast  of Albuquerque to Fourth of July Canyon and the ruins of the Salinas Pueblo Missions in the Manzano Mountains. Another day we headed west towards Grants and explored El Malpais National Monument including the lava beds, the Sandstone Bluffs  and a natural stone arch.  Our final jaunt tookGhost Ranch us north to Ghost Ranch made famous by Georgia O'Keefe(did you know it is rated as one of the top ten dinosaur fossil beds in the world?). We  took an easy hike into Box Canyon, had a picnic and then drove to Echo Amphitheatre. A special thanks to our friend Dan Widener for acting as our "official photographer" and capturing great snapshots of our travels and around the Turtle.

Throughout all of our trips, we were in awe of the changing and magnificent  landscapes!!  It was really fun to take these day trips - all within an easy drive from the Turtle. For more ideas about day trips, click on Chocolate Turtle Daytrips

Happy exploring,

Nancy & Dallas

Downtown ABQThe Albuquerque Balloon Museum, just minutes from the turtle, offers a wonderful overview of the history, culture, science, and art of the sport. As you plan your next trip to the region, incorporate a ride on the ABQ Trolly early during your visit. We took the ride recently with Albuquerque natives and out of town visitors and we all learned lots abouit the area from our enthusiastic tour guides. Also, there is a new art school in Corrales, the Corrales School of Art, whcih offers short term classes providing the finest art education for the beginner and the working professional.

New Adventures

Balloon Fiesta

Speaking of things to do, we just learned about some interesting outdoor adventures in the area that we can't wait to experience. In a recent issue of New Mexico Magazine there  was an article about kayaking  on the Rio Grande, the trip begins  on the north end of Corrales. Another company offers a jeep tour on nearby private lands.  Ballooning continues to be a year round  favorite sport. Consider our Up, Up and Way Balloon Package as a wonderful way to celebrate a special occasion.
