Roadrunner feeding time

Hi all!

With record low temps this past winter, many gardens throughout the area lost a number of plants. Nancy lost a lot of Rosemary, several Butterfly Bushes, and a Sliverlace Vine. Before she went away at the end of March to visit her grand-children, she planted the three big pots in the wagon with an assortment of flowers and vegetables. It looked pretty.  She thought they were safe from the bunnies, but when she returned she found them stripped of all their leaves, leaving little stalks sitting there. Hmmm...then she saw my friends the quails on the pots. Number 2 planting occurred and the same thing happened-bare stalks of stems. Yesterday she planted the pots AGAIN and covered it with bird netting.

The vegetable garden is looking great! Nancy put the bird netting over the bed where she planted spinach, beets including an heirloom variety, snow peas, onions, bok choy, and lettuce and everything came up-a first!!  My quail friends are amazing, they were able to find a low spot in the netting near the lettuce, so they were able to push it down enough to be able to nibble on the lettuce.

Baby Roadrunners

Feeding TimeWe think the second brood of Baby Roadrunners have arrived-both parents have been very busy this week  running back and forth getting food from us and scurrying back to the nest.  The nest for the first clutch was in the Cholla cacti out back and this second nest is in one of the salt cedar trees out front.

It was so amazing to watch the first clutch of  young ones make their entrance into the world when the parents  allowed  the babies (who are almost full grown) to come out with them to get food. The babies are allowed to come to the edge of the patio and the parents come up on the porch and get the raw hamburger from us. When they take it back to feed the little ones, the babies quickly flap their wings and make a fluttering motion with their mouth-and then the parents feed them. This went on for a couple of weeks before the adults shewed their offspring to find their own homes.

It was funny the other day the  baby Thrashers were huddling around mama roadrunner, flapping their wings and holding their mouths open for food.

 Art is in the Air

Art in the Park

Enjoying a day at Art in the Park.

One of our favorite events-the Corrales Art Studio Tour was just wonderful as usual this year. Over sixty artists opened their studios and galleries throughout the Village. In addition to enjoying (and purchasing) wonderful art, it's a great opportunity to explore different parts of the Village. Make plans to attend next year-it's usually the first full weekend in May.

Art in the Park began in May and will occur the third Sunday of each month through September. The cool shade of the huge Cottonwoods in La Entrada Park just off of Corrales Road provides a perfect setting to meet our local potters, jewelers, painters, etc.  Art in the Park is open from 10 am-4 pm.  For beautiful, original, and affordable art, come to Corrales!!  Want details? www.corralesartists.org

The 19th Old Church Artfest with handmade works by local New Mexico artists is Saturday and Sunday,

June 4 & 5 from 10-5 at the Old Church. They always have many great items and I seem to start my holiday shopping there.   www.corraleshistory.org
