It's pretty slow here right now in the Turtle gardens as we head into winter. The cool clear crisp nights have made for some beautiful moon rises over the Sandias. With the sliding door to the kitchen closed with the cooler weather, it's a little more difficult to get Dallas & Nancy's attention when I'm hungry, since they can't hear me.  But I've found if I sit up on the shelving next to the door and peer in. I'm just about eye level with them, and that usually works. We birds and bunnies are looking forward to the holidays when the yard has a pleasant glow at night from the lights on the old wagon and the luminarias on the roof.  But before we know it spring will be on its way and then the grounds will be abuzz with activity. I hope everyone has a great winter and holiday season.

Trying to find a gift for a special someone?  Many of you enjoyed shopping in Corrales when you were here, so we started looking for options. If you are looking for a gift for a relative or friend who lives in the area, a gift certificate from a Corrales restaurant or a gift basket of New Mexico gourmet food items with a bottle of wine from the Frontier Mart could be a perfect gift. We have found that several of your favorite places will ship.

The Copper Tree Gallery carries a wonderful selection of local artists' work including wood carvings, fine art, pottery and metal work. They will offer 10% off selected items and will ship your purchase for the cost of shipping. With a credit card, they will accept requests by phone 505-922-8899.

Check out the Quilts Ole website for a fabulous selection of batiks and brights. They are happy to ship items and you need only call 505-890-9416. They'll send you anything you see! Gift Certificates? Yes! In any denomination, and they mail them  too-- the perfect gift for the quilter in your life!

And don't forget a get-away at the Chocolate Turtle makes a great gift for family and friends. We have Gift Certificates available. Just call (877) 298-1800 or e-mail us at

Greetings!

Welcome to the inaugural issue of The Turtle Times, a newsletter to keep our friends and guests (past, present and future) abreast of happenings here at the Turtle and surrounding area.

Hi.  Allow me to introduce myself. I'm Romeo, the head roadrunner and VIB (Very Important Bird) at the Chocolate Turtle Bed & Breakfast. I live in the gardens of the Chocolate Turtle, along with my fellow roadrunners, a large community of quail, and bunnies galore. Nancy & Dallas will tell you that they have taught me to come up on the portal to be fed, but the reality is I've trained them to come running with food whenever I appear at the back door and call to them. To humor them, sometimes I come running through the arch to greet guests when they arrive. I've even convinced Dallas & Nancy to let me have my own column in the Turtle Times. Look for "Running with Romeo" in each issue of the newsletter, where I'll keep you up to date on the happenings in the gardens of the Turtle.  We all hope you will enjoy the Turtle Times. We welcome your feedback on the articles as well as your suggestions for topics in future issues.

Updates at the Turtle

Turtle Updates
We are continuing to look at the Turtle through the eyes of our guests- what can we do to make your stay more special?

In January we are going to close for 10 days to do a couple of significant renovations. The Berber carpet will be removed in the bedrooms and hallways and replaced with lovely satillo tile from Mexico. As many of you have experienced, we had this rich colored tile added to the Great Room before we opened and it greatly enhanced the appearance of the room. At a recent fundraising auction sponsored by Corrales MainStreet, we purchased an assortment of Persian Rugs, which will be used in the bedrooms

The vanities in the Road Runner Room and the Bunny Room are going to be replaced during this time too. New granite countertops, under mount sinks with new hardware and lighting will give these bathrooms a fresh, updated look.

To make it more convenient for our guests, we will offer a new option for making reservations. Instead of the "online availability" system we have been using, guests will be able to confirm a reservation instantaneously. Now you will be able to confirm your accommodations with us at the same time you book your transportation. Of course we are always available to talk with you to make reservations on the phone. This will just offer another convenient option.

During the summer of 2008, we started receiving reviews from guests on tripadvisor.com and  bedandbreakfast.com. Thought you might enjoy reading them.

If you have suggestions, we'd love to hear from you.

The fall has been unseasonably warm, but now there's a nip in the air, thoughts turn to tree trimming and holiday decorating at the Turtle and throughout the Village.

The weekend after Thanksgiving, November 28, 29 & 30, the Corrales Society of Artists is having their first annual Holiday Art Fest. 40 artists will be in tents on the field in front of the Recreation Center on Corrales Road. A perfect venue to find original, affordable art for that special someone. Fine art, pottery, jewelry, fiber art will be among the items available. Friday & Saturday 10-5 and Sunday 10-4. Stop by if you are in the area.

On December 5, 6, & 7 come to Corrales for the Jolly Holidays in Corrales.  Enjoy distinctive holiday shopping in the festively decorated  historic Village, located between Albuquerque and Rio Rancho. Visit our specialty shops and galleries and relax at local restaurants amidst a lovely atmosphere with musicians and carolers on Saturday and Sunday.

A free Children's Art Workshop will be held on Dec. 6 from 10-4. Enjoy the 21st Annual  Fine Crafts Show sponsored by the Corrales Historical Society featuring local artists in the Old San Ysidro church Dec. 5-7.

At 5:30 pm on Saturday, marvel at the magical Starlight Parade with lighted floats and vehicles. After the parade, step back in time at the free Holiday Open House at Casa San Ysidro decorated with farolitos and holiday greens. This partially reconstructed 19th century home has a world class Spanish Colonial collection of artifacts. Enjoy, too, the Old Fashioned  Christmas with St. Nicholas and a Bonfire. The Winter Growers Market, with live music by Jose Salazar, is December 7 from 10-1. Jolly Holidays is sponsored by Corrales MainStreet, visit the website or call 350-3955 for additional information

We hope you have enjoyed our inagural newsletter. With quarterly mailings we will keep you updated on the happenings here in Corrales and of course with our favorite resident, Romeo.

Sincerely,

Dallas and Nancy Renner
