Greetings!
The vibe of the arts in downtown Yonkers resonates on the walls of the Community Gallery@BDG. For the summer, we have transitioned the gallery space into providing opportunities for the community to embrace the arts. The Arts for Healing show is a deeply personal show for both artist and viewer. We hope to see you at the opening on Wednesday.

Community Project
Vicky Youngman & Hamilton Elementary Mural
This ceramic tile and painted mural was recently completed by Vicky Youngman, artist-in-residence, Janet Rush, art teacher, and the 6th grade students of Hamilton Elementary School in Mount Vernon. It is 14 feet long and the first of its kind to be permanently installed at the school. The theme brings together the students' cultural heritage and values, the concept of personal responsibility, consideration of career options and the building of school community spirit.
The mural, and other ceramic and mixed media student work, is represented in a current exhibition, "Innovations - When Education and the Arts Meet," at The Rotunda Gallery of the Mount Vernon Public Library. This exhibition marks the culmination of Innovative Alternative Strategies for Educators of Visual Art, an educational initiative designed to enhance visual arts education in the Mount Vernon School District. The U.S. Department of Education awarded the district a three-year grant for the project, which the district is developing in collaboration with Arts Westchester. Innovations is on view through August 23. More info at www.artswestchester.org.

Arlé, along with Luis Perelman, were among the five artists invited to create Art Violins for the Westchester Philharmonic Symphony Orchestra's Fund Raising Auction Gala.
Luis' aluminum can strips were skillfully cut and attached to all his violin's surfaces.
Arlé deconstructed hers, using all the elements of wood and string to create a shadow box specimen case. |
