Clay Day 2008

Arle Sklar-Weinstein
Greetings!
The other week I got to visit the Blue Door exhibit "Ceramic Expressions" at the library. There was one delightful piece after the other, covering a wide range of beauty, whimsy and intrigue.

I love art that leads me into mysterious, other-worldly spaces. A number of works did this, all in different ways.  For instance, "The Grotto," by Jacqueline Lorieo. I came upon it from the north, where a naked man was working his way into  a cave. His head wasn't visible, so I moved around to the other side to find it. Instead, I found the side of a woman who seemed likewise to be moving inwards, her head also not visible. What was between the two figures?  Were they face-to-face, or did each even know the other was present?

Then there was "Labyrinth" by Charles Birnbaum -- a series of tantalizing and beautifully textured shell-like shapes enfolded around and within each other. Objects like this make me want someone to create a ceramics exhibits where touching is encouraged!

Vera Manzi-Schacht's "Tempi Etto: Labyrinth from Lucca"  was a model for a larger work.  Inside a dark ancient building carved all over with inscriptions and topped with a muse-like figure, was a small surprise of a room delicately lit by natural light through tissue paper. Impossible not to want to go into that room.

Travelling to new places has never been so easy!

Aquefest 2008
.....a natural approach to Art!

Blue Door Artists took part in AqueFest, a festival along the old aqueduct trail in Yonkers, Hastings, Dobbs Ferry and Ossining. Artists helped community members create dreamcatchers using elements found in nature, such as shells, feathers and stones. It was difficult to compete with the fabuluous sounds of the Nepperhan Coummunity Center Drum and Bugle Youth Corps, but their energy was contagious and provided some artistic inspiration to all who participated.

Clay Day

aquefest 1

Blue Door has been a big participant in the development of "All Fired Up," the Westchester County-wide celebration of art work in clay this October through November.  Over 600 clay artists are showing their work at more than sixty venues in the County.  We served on the steering committee at Westchester Arts Council.  Blue Door's own exhibition of works in clay is currently showing at the Riverfront Library.

At our suggestion, a "Clay Day" was set for September 27.  This day was to kick off the clay art shows to be held as part of "All Fired Up."  We served on the steering committee for "Clay Day."  On Sept. 27 more than thirty ceramic artists ran "have fun with clay" tables for the public at more than twenty towns in Westchester.

Lily Schor represented Blue Door in the town of Elmsford on Clay Day, which turned out to also be the day of their annual Town fair, called Annual Elmsford Day.  Bob Williams, the Mayor of Elmsford, set us up in a tent on the fair grounds and made two large tables available to us.  We took with us 100 pounds of clay, which we rolled into hand-sized balls and put in kids' hands to play with.  The table was half full at noon.  By 1pm the table was full, with about eight children making objects in clay.  By 2pm both tables were full, both back and front, with about twenty-five kids making objects in clay.  They made so many interesting sculptures, including tiles, decorations and teapots, that the objects filled two more tables.  The kids who left were replaced by as many more new kids anxious to play with clay.  This fantastic participation went on until the day ended at about 6:30 pm.

The Mayor of Elmsford was our biggest booster, and gave us tremendous support.  We are indebted to this fine public servant.  Elmsford is lucky to have Mayor Bob Williams working for them.  We look forward to receiving an invitation next year to run a clay table at their Sept 2009 Town festival.
