Greetings!

Yesterday evening my husband and I heard the sound of katydids, which we associate with summer drifting into its laziest days.  It's a great time of year to relax and wander around our own area checking out all the art on public display.  Although I've been involved with Blue Door for awhile, until we started putting together the newsletter I never realized just how much art there was to be seen around town almost any time.  For ideas, read on; you can also check our previous newsletters (under Quick Links at left) for more.

Art From A New Perspective

ARENA_Gallery_artistphotoArt has moved beyond the traditional means of pencils, pens and paint in the studio. As artists we are faced with new and exciting avenues to incorporate technology into the art process. Yes, learning this process may not be second nature but exploring the possibilities are intriguing.

To many of us, the use of technology is a necessity in life. Think about the ways technology has pathed the way for artists to communicate by online galleries, blogs, and even e-newsletters.

Bill Allen describes his digital image stating, "I used the paint program on the computer to do it. It's called UNRED and it's inspired by a scene from the Hitchcock film North By Northwest. I simply changed the main color from blue to red."

How has technology influenced your artistic journey?

Yonkers RiverFest 2008
Call for Volunteers and Donations

Blue Door will once again have a table ARENA_Gallery_artistphoto
at Yonkers RiverFest, Saturday art
project. Last year's event was a huge succes
s, and we hope to bring the arts into the community once again at RiverFest. This is also an important event for Blue Door to increase our visibilty within the community.

We are asking all members to volunteer some time at our table: a minimum of two hours between 11am and 5pm. We are also looking for donations of art materials: glue, collage materials, etc. Please contact Courtney Puciata if you can donate or
volunteer: cpuciata@yahoo.com.

Yonkers Students Join
Forces to Put Together
the ARENA Gallery

The ARENA gallery, an art gallery founded by four Yonkers International Baccalaureate High School students (Daniel Boccato, Julieta Cardenas, Guadalupe Maceda, Nikolla Mernaci), had its first exhibition from June 6 to June 13. Rightfully entitled "Collective Struggle," this exhibition had an opening reception on Friday, June 6.  It had the elegance of an actual art gallery, inside a school building. The event brought together students, family members, faculty, and the school's principal Mr. Vigliotti. Important figures from the art world were there to show support for the event, such as Barbara Segal, director of Yonkers Arts, Inc., and acclaimed artist and educator Tim Rollins. A sense that this was only the beginning, and that many more ambitious projects would arise, hovered in the air.

To see pictures and videos of this event, you may visit the "Collective Struggle" exhibition site:

Everything started with the four student's flaming desire not to be apathetic and idle. "We do not want to conform ourselves to the neutral lifestyle of this world, which drives the passive, stagnant masses into a self-destructive and perverse system. We call ourselves intense people, because we see limitless potential in the resources we have access to, and we will do something with them. The 'something' in itself is not our concern; the verb is the essence. Nouns are temporary; verbs are eternal."
