What, exactly, do you mean?
|
Consider this recent statement by a hospital: "We are moving from the traditional hospital-centered system to one that is patient-centric and physician-driven."Here's how I imagine a general reader responding: "What, what? Weren't hospitals always patient-centric? Do you mean the docs are not already in charge of the hospital?" Here's another one: "We are shifting our focus from episodic care to population management." Could this mean that instead of seeing patients we are going to do public health work? One of the perils of reform is the introduction of new, technical language tossed back and forth among professionals. I think the second statement actually means that, while continuing to care for individual patients, they are increasing their capacity to monitor and improve population-wide conditions, such as diabetes. But I would have to ask them, to find out, and I may not have time. What do you think? If you have wonderful ideas about better health care, why not make them clear to your larger audience? See you in April!
