How to write effectively for and about health care

March 2011

Turning Points

This newsletter is a little late because here in Belmont MA we are in the middle of the Great College Search, my daughter Ginny being a high school junior. Last week we drove south to Maryland and west to Amherst, and in April we'll be driving all around Wisconsin and possibly Ohio.

As many of you know, this is a time of upheaval, excitement, and uncertainty, with an intense focus on the future and a strong sense of leaving an era behind.

It calls for much questioning, a lot of patience, a sense of humor, and the ability to deal with significant change.

And it generates a lot of energy.

I say all of this because I believe that when you are writing about your organization, you can benefit from the same level of excitement and inquiry--if on a smaller scale.

The deeper your sense is of who you are and why you are valuable, the stronger your voice will be. A sense of your history (always a source of strength) will underline the case for your services.

And the more exploring you do before you put together your newsletter, or your annual report, the richer your content will be.

So, good luck with your own searching. Spring is coming, so they tell me.

See you in April!

Offer: Writing Your History

People mistakenly assume that writing history is an obligatory task, resulting in a rather dry and tedious piece of copy that no one really wants to read.

But remember this: your history is a story, and few can resist a story. Stories underlie the claims you make about the services you offer.

Through April, 2011, I'm offering a consultation and content development for your history for half the usual price, whether you already have a short piece in place, or are thinking about a new and much longer history to stand on its own.

This can mean quite a savings, so contact me soon!

WordDrive stepped in to help with a very important issue of our newsletter and got us off the dime, putting the main structure in place. You heard us very clearly and provided accurate reporting. I could not have gotten this issue done without you. As to the profile you reported and wrote for us, I was absolutely satisfied-you captured the man very well.

Going on a mission trip
And speaking of searches, late this month I'm traveling to Honduras with a group of friends to help out at El Hogar de Amor e Esperanza, an orphanage in the capital city of Tegucigalpa. We'll be there for a week, painting and building and playing with the kids. This is new for me--never been south of Texas, never done a mission trip. Stay tuned!
