Fall Frenzy Begins with a Bang !

We no more than released the words from our lips about the "fall frenzy" and... BAM ... it hit. The Davidson brothers from Richmond, Virginia reported three back to back 40-inch plus pike from Whitewater Lake - as guests at our Striker's Point Lodge. And just last week Pat Myers of Pewaukee, WI landed two trophy pike - a 46 and a 42 at the outflow rapids on Whitewater Lake as well.
Chris Clemmons returned for his second trip of the year, this time to D'Alton Lake, where he and members of his group have visited 14 times. Chris reports in with three Master Angler Walleye...and robust Pike angling as well.
And that photo - on the right - from Mojikit, is in fact, a thousand words, about the health and size of the Pike up at Mojikit Channel. That's Mark Riley, on his 9th consecutive trip with us. He reports late August success with the flashy Williams Whitefish spoon.
These are all seasoned anglers, willing to spend time on the water, relying on experience and determination ... and dialing in the success.
The header photo says it all about autumn in Boreal Forest. It was taken on the dock at D'Alton Lake.

More Than a Decade On D'Alton Lake
Eleven years ago...Chris Clemmons made his first cast on D'Alton Lake. And last week he made his umpteenth. Throughout the "More Than a Decade on D'Alton" he has kept records of his "board fish" (Walleyes 20 inches or longer) ... and of his general observations. In those eleven years and fourteen trips, his groups have caught and released 54 Master Angler Walleye, with the largest being 31 inches.
Today, Chris is a professional angler, having won the Walleye National Championship, and a good friend of Wilderness North. When you look through the downloads section of our website, you will find his considerable contribution to the resources anglers of all experience can share.
Last week his group registered three Master Angler Walleye (26 inches plus). The photos are on the right: that's Michael Hagemann in the red cap, and Wayne Senneke in the yellow coat. Chris further reports: "It was the group's overall consensus that the lake was experiencing some sort of seasonal transition. We also noticed a thermocline on our electronics the first two days, which vanished towards mid-week."
Two additional significant observations:
1) The average girth of the Walleyes has increased significantly over the years.
2) The Pike numbers seemed to be up this year, along with the average size and girth of the fish.
Overall it was another great trip to D'Alton, which continues to produce above average walleye, including Master Angler fish.

Fall Frenzy Arrives at Whitewater Lake.
Guests often ask me if these trips ever get old?
I ha ve one word for them. NEVER!! And this past week's trip to Whitewater Lake was no exception. Especially here at Strikers Point Lodge.
After 4 days on the water, Mark Smith of New Providence NJ landed our group's largest pike at 42 inches. She was a heavy girl and got fooled by a jig and sucker minnow combo only three minutes from the lodge. Plus, we had great success on mid sized walleyes of 18-22 inches on island points and deep drop offs.
Mother Nature threw some wind, rain and a nice 28 degree night at us, but couldn't slow anyone down. That includes the outstanding staff we have in place. I don't know if it was the fire waiting for us in our cabin on a cold afternoon or the shore lunch prepared in our cabin on a rainy day that was more impressive. Both were great little touches that make everyone feel welcome at this full service American Plan Lodge ... and more importantly welcome back!
I always like to hear stories from our guests about what they do to prepare for their trip. Joe Corbett spent a few mornings swimming and jogging around SPL to keep in shape for his upcoming Triathalon. The Davidson brothers, fresh off two natural disasters in the Richmond VA area, were in for the second time this year, landed a pair of pike a 42 and a 43 incher - all within a 40 minute time frame - just outside the Bay of Pigs. The LaCoose party- die hard Packer Fans - had a great time, reporting improved fishing as their week went on. Brian Shelley from Toronto and his group enjoyed some great fishing in the narrows with our guide Luke Chisholm.
Thanks to my buddies Mark and Mitch for another great trip and another year of relaxation and good laughs. I am all ready looking forward to next year and also to chatting with any of you as you plan your trip for 2012.

Summer Lingers Into Fall

There was frost on the ground in Armstrong on Labor Day morning. People at most Wilderness North locations likely missed out on this seasonal reality because lake temperatures are still relatively warm. Armstrong is a noteworthy frost location in Ontario.
Forecast
Most days in the recent week were warmer than normal and cool mornings like on Monday and Tuesday are not likely in the coming week. Expect afternoon temperatures of 72 to 82 F (22 to 28C), which are well above average for this time of the year. Normal highs are around 63F (17C).
A ridge of high pressure during the week will bring considerable sun and light winds, occasionally moderate in the afternoon.

Master Angler |
Many of our guests are official Wilderness North Master Anglers. As such we have prepared a special "hat pin" that certifies their remarkable angling. Our Lodge Managers often collect their catch data, and pass out these pins. However, sometimes we miss a departing guest who has had such good fortune. Or someone from an outpost adventure heads home without registering their catch. Not To Worry... If you have caught and released a Walleye 26 inches or longer, or a Northern Pike 40 inches or longer in 2011 you qualify. Here is your chance to register your fish, and receive your hat pin in the mail.
By clicking here, you can tell us about your catch. Make sure to give us your phone number so that we may call you, and have you tell us about the moment.
