Trophy Fishing Heats Up

As we check in with you at mid August 2011, we are beginning to see a hints of Autumn in the fall colours, especially in our low-growing vegetation.

Up on the Albany, our Makokibatan Lake has burst back to "trophy" life with more than a dozen Master Angler Walleye registered in the past few days. These last few weeks of the season are notorious for big production numbers and we expect this year to be no exception. The Fall Feeding Frenzy cannot be far off. Good fishing out on Whitewater Lake is part of our report today, and outpost guests at D'Alton enjoyed both good angling and good wildlife viewing.

Weather patterns, with small but vigorious fronts pushing through every few days, are another true sign of the impending autumnal changes.

Our friends at Lund Boats, have chosen Wilderness North's  Striker's Point Lodge as their featured Canadian destination in their quarterly magazine. Lund recently sent up a writer and photographer to create the story...one which they will share with thousands of readers in September. We enjoyed having them in camp, and appreciate the spotlight on our great destination in the heart of the Wabakimi Park. If you would like at PDF copy of the story and photos, just click here and we will send it to you via e-mail.

I always enjoy hearing from you...so keep those e-mails coming.

News from Makokibatan Lodge

Big Walleye Hit Hard On The Albany

This past week at Makokibatan Lodge we welcomed the Melton group from Indiana who lit up the lake claiming 15 Master Angler Walleye for the week. Gene Benedict landed three of them, a 28-in, 27-in and a 26-in caught on a jig head with a twister tail topped with a leech. Jim  DeCreane  went all out catching an impressive six of the big trophy Master Angler glasseyes himself. Five at 26-in and one at 27-in caught on a jig head with GULP minnows and leeches. Dave Melton caught a nice 27-in Walleye also on a jig with a live leech. Larry Thompson, who wrote an impressive song about Makokibatan Lake and the staff, snagged a nice 26-in Walleye on a jig head with a leech. Bruce Bancroff reeled in a nice 26-in goldeneye as well on a jig head with a leech.

It was our pleasure to also welcome the Dufford group from Pennsylvania who were a very entertaining group and caught many nice fish. Kevin Dufford caught three beautiful Walleye a 26-27-in and the biggest of the week a 29-incher.

Overall the fishing was extremely good at Makokibatan Lake, with our return to high production and the registration of many Master Anglers.

News from Striker's Point Lodge

Whitewater Lake Produces Summer Numbers

This week at Striker's Point Lodge we welcomed the Smith Party from Maryland, the Bruner Party from Arkansas and the Mullally Gang from New York.

The Smiths, guided by our own Luke Chisolm caught a nice honourable mention 36-in Northern Pike. It was caught on what seems to be this year's magic lure, the Storm Brand Wild Eyed Seeker Shad. The best fishing was found at the north ends of the islands east of Burnt Island. From their own reports, this father and son combo had a great trip and we hope to see them back soon.

The Bruners, in the boat with First Nation Guide, Peter Nate, caught a lot of Walleye with Leo catching a Walleye Master Angler trophy at 27-in. In addition, they reported catching a lot of Pike, even one which had a Walleye in it's mouth. They had a great shore lunch every day.

While Tim Mullally is a bit more relaxed about angling, he did catch plenty of Walleye for his shore lunch everyday. He loves the wilderness and catching fish is, "Just a bonus," he claims.

Graham Saunders Weather Ahead

Typical August...Watch Those Fire Dangers

Grfaham Saunders

Last week featured considerable sun, temperatures in the mid to high 70s and light winds - perfect vacation weather for most people. Warm water in lakes and rivers was great for swimming but sometimes making fishing a bit more challenging.

However, this perfect weather continues to contribute to forest fire activity. Almost all of the 48 new fires in recent days were caused by lightning. Fortunately, the light winds have helped firefighters to contain most of these fires.

Forecast

A cold front passed through the region yesterday. Today will be cooler with some scattered showers. The coming week will feature sun on most days with a chance of occasional showers in the late afternoon and evening later in the week. Expect cooler temperatures - in the low 70s (22 C).

Some showers over the region yesterday and today will do little to contain fire activity. Forest fire danger continues to be high - be very careful with any open fires.

Many of our  guests are official Wilderness North Master Anglers. As such we have prepared a special "hat pin" that certifies their remarkable angling.

Our Lodge Managers often collect their catch data, and pass out these pins. However, sometimes we miss a departing guest who has had such good fortune.  Or someone from an outpost adventure heads home without registering their catch.

Not To Worry...

If you have caught and released a Walleye 26 inches or longer, or a Northern Pike 40 inches or longer  in 2011 you qualify.

Here is your chance to register your fish, and receive by mail your hat pin.

D'alton Outpost

Just thought we'd fire off a quick email to tell you about our trip to D'alton.

Best day = 60 fish in the boat.

Worst day = 40 fish in the boat.

Average for the week = 48 fish in the boat every day.

We really didn't fish that hard to be honest with you.  Didn't start before 10am and were back in camp before dark.  Real fishermen would have had much better results than these, since Vera and I really don't have any idea what we are doing but we had a great time.

Snuck the boat up on a cow/calf Moose on the first evening and then crept up on a bull the second evening.  All three of these Moose were feeding in the swamp down by the waterfalls and we were able to get pretty close.  Maybe 50-yards from the cow and 25-yards from the bull.

Thanks for the great vacation.
