It was new for 2009. The Ontario Outdoors Card together with your fishing license - now it's the law of the land.

The card is good for 3 years and will cost you about $9 USD.

Our Own Dr Phil

Chief Pilot Phil Cook

Okay  -  he's not a doctor, but it is comforting to meet our chief pilot Phil Cook.

 

Phil has over 11,000 hours in his log book, nearly half at the controls of a float plane.

 

As chief pilot, he not only flies guests in our DeHavilland Otters, but oversees the training and guidance of our team of pilots.

 

His work is one more way we prove that safety is objective number one when flying in the Ontario wilderness.

Open For 2011- At Last!

It's spring-well nearly spring. OK-there was frost on the wings of the airplanes this morning, and though the lake ice is out - snow squalls were reported from our Albany River lodges - way up north. That is what we call nearly Spring.

Guests have been fishing from a few of our outpost cabins, and two of our three lodges, so next week we will begin our weekly fishing report service to you. I can report that lake levels are fine, thanks to abundant winter snows and late winter rains - and we now believe the pike are running shallow and the walleyes are mostly spawned out. We will have more details on fishing patterns once our guests report about their trip following their season opening adventures.

New Guest Services:

This year we have relocated our guest welcome center from Waweig Lake near Armstrong to Thunder Bay. (See photo in the header.)  Our arriving guests will receive all final trip planning and processing at our renovated headquarters, gift shop, and float plane hangar here in Thunder Bay.  And we are offering complimentary motor coach shuttle   

Jodi Wilderness North GUest servicesservice to our floatplane docks at both Armstrong and Nakina. Guests will be greeted here by Jodi Strizec, our new Guest Services Coordinator, who also happens to be an accomplished chef. She teaches Culinary Arts at Confederacy College - see her walleye rub recipe below. So Jodi literally wears two hats - that tall white one below and the Wilderness North cap on the right. 

Special Money Saving Offer:  This is the time of year we have a few openings in our schedule that we call "filler trips." Jodi's Dry Rub Marinade

 

Ingredients

2 Tbsp course cracked black pepperJodi Wilderness North GUest services

6 Tbsp chili powder

3 Tbsp smoked paprika                         1 Tbsp mixed dried Italian herbs

2 Tbsp dried garlic powder

2 Tbsp freeze dried garlic flakes

2 Tbsp dried onion powder

1 Tbsp freeze dried onion flakes

½ Tbsp of course salt

 

Method

Place all of the ingredients into a mixing bowl and blend well.Keep the rub mix in an air tight container or bag.

 

When you have your fish filleted, sprinkle the desired amount of seasoning onto both sides of the fish fillet.

This rub is spicy. The more you put on the spicier it gets.

You can now dry grill your fish over an open flame (bbq it) or fry it in a pan with a small amount of oil (about 1 tsp per fish fillet).

 

Note:  This rub will last 3 or 4 months if keep out of direct light and in an air tight container.


Tackle Time - Let's Get Ready

It's that time of the year again and I couldn't be more excited. After a long, cold winter, we are shuttling our first guests into their destinations and wishing them "Good Fishing." I am always interested to see what guests have added to their tackle boxes in the off season. Heck, some may have even dusted off the lathe in the basement and made their own lures. As anglers, we can always make an excuse on why we need the new Berkeley Power Wiggler Triple Action Blood Hook Spinning Wobbler (W/ Skirt) in scented and unscented available in 17 different colors and sizes. This makes perfect sense in all of our minds. All of this shopping makes the annual trek north that much more fun. The anticipation is half of the adventure for us and the truth is, we always bring too much.

 

So I have taken inventory of my tackle box and made a list of my favorites. If I were stranded in the Canadian Wilderness for an extended period of time with only these lures, I would never worry about starving.  This tackle list will serve you well up north.    

    

PIKE Tackle Box: 

Williams Whitefish (5.25 inch in silver)
Mepps Syclops (1 oz in blue, gold or silver)
Johnson Silver Minnow (1 1/8 oz in silver and gold)
Daredevil spoon (1 oz in red/whites and 5 of diamonds)


WALLEYE Tackle Box: 

3/8  and 1/4 oz jig heads in assorted colors

(25 or so per person)

3 and 4 inch jig tails in assorted colors.  

(white, chartreuse, pink, orange)

Jointed Rapalas.  J-11 and J-13 in assorted colors.

These will work for walleye and pike.
