Drink to Your Health

Purewater

Claimed by some to be the greatest product in the outdoor adventure world in 2008, this Super Powder purifies water with just one teaspoon to make 2.5 gallons of drinkable H2O.
The powder elimates all contaminants including bacteria, virus, and parastic cysts. It is lightweight and cheap, and the six packet box is just $15.

We advise our guests to boil water to "just make sure" of complete protection.  Now they can just stir in a packet of Pur and rest assured their getting pure clean water.

Say That Breaking Up Is Hard To Do!

Well  maybe in song...but not for the Samuel Risley.

 N
amed after the first maritime inspector back in the 19th century, this 230 foot long 3200 ton Canadian Coast Guard ice breaker is in Thunder Bay - clearing paths for the big lakers to get into port.

We see her outside our windows here at the home offices nearly every day now. She is dispatched where ever shipping lanes need to be clear of ice. She uses that big crane to place and maintain bouys throughout lake Superior.

Unlike like the U.S. Coast Guard, the 22 crew members on the Samuel Risley are not military personnel, but are employed by Fisheries and Ocean of Canada.

Is that the sound of a countdown clock?
Oh Yeah! In less than a month, our first guests will be at their adventure destinations. Our season opens the third weekend in May. Whew that's close !

Right now, there is still ice on the water here in Thunder Bay, however the Canadian Coast Guard Ice Breaker, is busy everyday, (see sidebar on the Samuel Risley) so we have flown our last flights on skis for the winter. As for the actual date of ice out? - well that is always a gamble - but we think this is the last week of ice in Thunder Bay, with ice out complete at Armstrong by opening (fingers crossed). Graham Saunders talks about ice out and weather conditions at this time of year in his article and podcast.

Tyler has written a great article on new products for your tackle box, and is busy with booked guests and the details of their trips in May and June.

Our friend and associate, Jenni McDermid - Wildlife Conservation CanadaWildlife Conservation of Canada - has received grant approval of the Sturgeon Study in our area, which entails a partnership with First Nation communities, and with Wilderness North. She tells us more about the study, and how guests will play a role in data collection in her podcast - Listen Now.

Our planes are nearly ready for flying, with the floats being bolted on, and a new paint job on one of the DeHavilland Otters.

Special offer for those with flexible travel calendars.

We have reduced the costs of a few remaining adventures in our 2009 schedule- with savings up to 40%. These trips fill open seats on our planes and open dates at our lodges, housekeeping camps, or remote cabin destinations. This offer is ONLY valid for certain dates and destinations. In other words, we set the dates, the group size minimums and maximums, and you save the money.

There is no list of these trips to send out, since dates change daily. These "fill in" adventures sell out rapidly, so time is of the essence. 1-888-465-3474 is the number to call for more details. When you call, tell us about the adventure you are seeking, the general dates you would be available, and the group size you have in mind.

Then we'll check our most current flight schedules and destination bookings to see if we have a match. This usually takes about 24 hours.

So if you're flexible, so are our rates.

Your comments are welcome as well as your request for more information. You may call me at 1-888-465-3474 or send in those e-mails

What is Rotten Ice?Grfaham Saunders
 ...by Graham Saunders

The fact is, ice cannot break up and disappear until it goes through the process of  "getting rotten."  That actually requires that the smooth, clear, and "hard as steel" aspects of the ice we find in early February, is impacted by rain, freeze and thaw days and night, and even gets slushy on the surface during the warmer days.

The combination of wind, sun, even warm rains all take their toll on ice in making it rotten and ready for break up and ice out. However, one other factor comes into play - refreeze. Ideally we need temperatures above freezing both during the day AND at night.

As for official ice out ? I am thinking that this will occur about May 10-15 near Armstrong, but later up at the Albany.  For now we're on the look out for rotten ice - yes we want it and want it now!

I'll tell you more in my podcast - click here.

Tackle Box Tips
...by Tyler LancastertylerPaddle

I
was just looking through the tackle box for this summer and noticed rust on the hooks that was not there last fall. Now I should have known better than to leave wet items in the trays over the winter - but as they say, " hindsight is 20-20."  Now WD-40 norust has an answer for this problem, not only for your tackle box, but in gun cases, tool boxes and anything where metal stored. It's called the 3-in-1 No Rust Shield, and you can learn more by clicking here.

Last month we had an article on insect repellent patches. Our guests wrote back with a 50/50 Ultrathongood/bad review of these products. We have since discovered another product for your consideration, from 3M. It is called ULTRATHON, and those guests who told us about it, say it is great. This link, can tell you more.

HandCleaners
Did you know that those little containers of hand purifier offer a good way to start a fire? Since they are alcohol based they keep your hands clean, and give you a great choice for a fire-starter in an emergency.

And there is one other product you may find handy in the tackle box.  It is called E Z Towel.
Here is a coEZ Towel Logompacted towel, about the size of 5 stacked nickels in its original form.  All you do is add water and watch it grow.  Simply unroll the EZ Towel and use it as you wish.  Opened up, the EZ Towel is 8 1/2" X 9 1/2" - Click here to learn more.

I will be calling all of our guests, with trips scheduled for our Housekeeping camps, and American Plan lodges starting this week.

My first calls will be to those parties with trips for May and June. I look forward to chatting with you, and seeing many of you up at Striker's Point Lodge this summer.

Keep in touch - click here to start an e-mail to me.

Weekly Reports You Design

You may know that starting about the third Tuesday of May, we begin e-mailing out our weekly comprehensive fishing reports from our many lodges and remote cabins - from information gathered from our guests as they complete their adventures and head for home.

That's about a month from now. These weekly reports continue to arrive at your e-mail address through mid September each season. BTW: Our archives of the past few years are available by clicking here.

We also have reporters at each our lodges who keep track of angling conditions, weather, and other news fromKrista Smile their corners of the boreal forest.

And Krista's Korner is both a podcast and column featuring her observations of adventure travel here in Canada from Krista Cheeseman.

This year we are adding one additional element, Joe's World. Joe Pichey, one of our trip planners and Joe Picheyoutdoor experts will add his experiences in the wilderness and getting into the wilderness, and in our first report he'll tell us more about some interesting stops you may want to consider along the way if you're driving up from the US on I-35 North from the Twin Cities.

Now it's your call.  Just click on send now, button below and send us an e-mail about new content you might find helpful. You ideas are always welcome as we look forward to a great 2009 season.  Send Now.
