Looking Ahead to 2009 ...by Alan Cheeseman
First, let's catch up on the changes to the laws. As we reported in December, every guest in 2009, will be required to purchase an "Ontario Outdoor Card" along with a fishing license. It's really a good idea, since your Outdoor Card will make it easier to get licenses in the future, even on line, and give the Ministry of Natural Resources a good data base with which to keep in touch about changing regulations. The fee is just $9.00 (Can) for a three year card. Click here to listen to a podcast with Burton McClelland MGR of Licensing for Ontario's Ministry of Natural Resources discussing the new cards.
Also starting in 2009 EVERY person entering Canada must have a Passport from their country of citizenship. If you live in the US - click here for a link to apply for your Passport. The process takes about three weeks from the day you file the completed application, so filing early is a great idea.
You may recall that outdoor writer T. Edward "Eddie" Nickens and renowned birder, Dr. Jeff Wells were out to our Miminiska Lodge last June. Their purpose was twofold. Nickens was preparing a feature article for the Audubon Magazine on the Boreal Forests of Northwestern Ontario, addressing the impact that man has made on the wilderness.
Dr. Wells, was recording bird calls as part of his research for the Boreal Songbird Initiative. He is the Senior Scientist for this non-profit group. Learn more about The Boreal Songbird Initiative and hear recordings of the birds of Canada by clicking here.
The article by Eddie Nickens is the cover story this month in the Audubon Magazine and is called "Paper Chase." Click here to read the article on line, and here is another link (click here) that has an actual log of the June trip on the Albany and some great photos.

What Exactly is a Wilder-Buck?
First off it is NOT a deer. Or there would have to be Wilder-Does. And Wilder-Fawns.
It's more like we're printing money to give to our guests.
Wilder-Bucks are actually Wilderness North Dollars. And for a limited time we are offering 100 Wilder-Bucks to each member of every party who schedules a trip for the 2009 season, and pays for the trip in full by March 1st.*
You can use these Wilder-Bucks for gift shop items, live bait or tackle, fly-out trips or guide services from our lodges plus rental equipment and other products and services your trip planner can tell you more about.
So when you are scheduling your fly-in adventure for 2009 ask about your chance to enhance your trip without paying a dime out of your pocket.
Now there are some limitations: For example, those who have already booked their trip through the Reel Deal Promotion (which has now expired) are NOT eligible. Wilder-Bucks may NOT be used to pay for beverages, food paks, or licenses.
*Purchase power based on the Canadian currency at time of purchase. |
Something Old - Something New...and Did I Tell You It's COLD ! ...by Tyler Lancaster
An "old" hook and a "new" rod and a hand crafted lure from British Columbia.
But first - - Wow! It's cold. I have had the chance to do a bit of ice fishing, but, as Graham will prove with his review of the records, it is really cold this Winter and lot's of snow.
At minus 35 the temp is the same F or C, and it's been down around those numbers in January.
If you forgot your gloves that's bad. If you like strong winter roads, and deep ice, it's good. So we'll grin ... but we won't bare it. :)
I have a podcast for you, in which I chat about the Mustad hook, called the "Slow Death" ... now it's not a new product, but it's finding a new life among walleye anglers wanting to make sure their live bait, especially night crawlers, are in the strike zone just off the bottom. I'll tell you how rig it. (Click on the logo to see the hook.) And I have found an entire new line of lighter, stronger fishing rods being introduced by Shimano. And surprisingly enough, they are moderately priced with no rod in the line over $60 dollars. I'll chat about them, or you can visit the Shimano website.
BTW - Field and Stream for February 2009 has announced it's 15 "killer" new lures for the 2009 season. At the top? - YUM's Money Craw. Following in order: 2. The Diawa Chugger Minnow; 3. Mepps Deeprunner Spinner; 4. Bass Pro's Nitro Shad Dancer; and 5. Gene Larew's Biffle-O-Lizard. I believe these lures are more likely to be targeted at bass, not our northern species.
Anyway, I am interested in your "top three" lures for both walleye and pike. Click here to send me an e-mail.
I have also come across a new lure made out in B.C. It's called Baitrix Tunables and I will tell you more in the podcast. (Click on the logo to see the lure.)

They're Coming Back in '09 ...Krista Cheeseman
It was just a year ago that we announced a special event to be staged at our Miminiska Lodge on the Albany River. We had just learned about a group called Project Healing Waters, from Mark Snyder a frequent guest from Washington DC. Once we learned about the group, (see story to the left) we set aside rooms, food, flights and boats to welcome a group of ten soldiers.
Both Mark and I will bring you up to date on the podcast - listen now.
Guests, friends, and corporations joined us in giving services and money to fly the soldiers here for their "Healing on the Albany" week in the cool green boreal forest of Ontario.
We have decided to host our second such trip in 2009. The dates are July 11-17.
Once again wounded soldiers from both the US and Canada will be our guests, with Mark as their trip coordinator.
It will be my pleasure to coordinate the event here in Canada. To learn more about last year's event click on the big PHW logo below.
To donate - and your financial help is needed - please e-mail me with your questions or your pledge. Just click here to start the e-mail.

Ice Depths and Cold Temps ...by Graham Saunders
Early ice. Early and more snow. In two phrases that summarizes our Winter in Ontario so far in 2008-09. And with two more months to go this could be a record setter.
In my podcast I compare this winter to the past two (click here to listen) and I have posted an article on the formation of ice, the winter roads, and some other interesting facts about our Winters here in Thunder Bay and in Northern Ontario as well. Just click here to go our downloads section for a PDF of the story called Winter Ice. |
