We Are The Champions - My Friend |

|
Yup that was a big hit by Queen. AND it applies to some pretty special guests coming to our Miminiska Lodge in 2009, up on the Albany River: Adult Sean Colter, six year old Jordan Colter, and nine year old Tyler Danielson, winners of the 2008 Anglers Young Anglers International Championship held recently at Lake of the Woods near Kenora, Ontario. This threesome and their choice of guests will have both a U.S. and Canadian four day trip as their prize for winning the nineteen team AYA Championship event that closed out the 2008 season. The team is from Grand Rapids - no, not THAT Grand Rapids this one is in Minnesota. AYA's American Prize is a four day trip to Walt Disney World in Orlando. Sean Colter served as the adult team captain coaching the two youngsters. AYA is sponsored by Lund Boats, and a host of other companies who wish to give young anglers the opportunity to become involved in tournament fishing. Click here for more information about AYA.

So Long - But Not Good-Bye
...by Alan Cheeseman
It's hard to believe. Our 2008 fishing season is now over. With mostly higher lake levels, cooler temperatures, and better informed anglers, we set an all time record for Master Angler catches. With 205 Master Anglers, 129 of which were Northern Pike, we continue to be mindful of what a wonderful fishery we have here in the Boreal Forest of Northwest Ontario.
The season had some additional "firsts" for us as well:
- The first Canadian Project Healing Waters event in July up at Miminiska Lodge.
- Wilderness North joining hands with Walt Disney World as grand prize providers in the Anglers - Young Anglers tournament trail, sponsored by Lun
d Boats. - Miminiska Lodge receiving the Orvis Endorsed Destination Certification.
- The special Birds of the Boreal trip along the Albany. Eddie Nickles' story will appear in the January 2009 edition of Audubon Magazine.
What better way to conclude the 2008 season than with news from one of our many returning group of anglers who, for more than a decade, have come up from the Chicagoland area to track down those famous D'Alton Walleye. I am talking about the Chris Clemmons' party. Chris is a member of our resource writing team, and together with his brothers and friends call their 2008 D'Alton Lake adventure last week one of the top three in the past decade. That photo in the upper left hand corner of the header is group member Mickey Downey and the 27 inch Master Angler beauty he caught last week. However, it was two inches shy of this trophy in the hands of Chris's brother, Brad, which measured in at 29 inches. (Photo is here on the right.)
By the way, Mickey had two Master Angler Walleye and Chris tells us they were all caught on the full moon at the exact "peak" time predicted in our SoLunar table. Chris also participated in the GULP vs Live, test and reports that, while GULP did okay, his big live ciscoe minnows were more successful at calling up the big Walleye below 20 feet. Our podcast this week features a conversation with Chris and you can listen now by clicking here.
Starting in mid October, our Words From The Wilderness newsletters will be coming your way every three weeks until late June 2009.
I hope you know much it means to Krista and me, and all the members of our staff to make new friends each season, and to renew friendships with our many returning guests. Over the winter we will keep you up to date on the girls, our plans for 2009, and fresh opportunities for you and your groups to visit the wilderness of Northwest Ontario.
Keep in touch. I welcome your phone calls and e-mails. You can send one now.

Our Season Weather Recap, and Last Weekly Forecast ...Professor Graham Saunders There will be some rainy periods today - September 24th - then the rain moves out tomorrow, with some clearing and generally warmer days, even a bit warmer than usual. Highs will reach about 57, as we move toward the weekend, and a bit more rain moving in early next week.
You can hear the podcast by clicking here.
Fall colours are just now coming on in Thunder Bay, but at full glory in Armstrong and points north. However, since the past eight weeks have been mostly dry, these leaves can easily be swept away by a blustery autumn rain event that is sure to come.
As I look back over the summer, the statistics tell us it was pretty much normal, but we know the "normalcy" is the result of exceptional rainy days in May and June, followed by rather hot dry days in July and August. Anglers tell us the full lakes and streams from early Spring, did make fishing excellent in the Province.
In the upcoming Words From The Wilderness newsletter, scheduled for mid October, I'll tell you more about the Hurricane Season 2008, how hurricanes are named today, and how the "naming regiment" all began.
Graham Saunders, is professor of meteorology at Lakehead University here in Thunder Bay, and weather commentator for the Thunder Bay Chronicle Journal and for Wilderness North.

Drum Roll Please ! Master Anglers 2008! ...by Krista Cheeseman
I have prepared and loaded at the website, my recap of the 2008 Master Angler report - to date.
I say "to date" because it seems that every season some of our guests forget to register their catch with us before they leave for home - and this note is "LAST CALL". If you caught and released a Walleye 26 inches long or longer, or a Northern Pike 40 inches or longer contact me right away by e-mail. If you have registered your fish, and have NOT received your Master Angler pin, let me know by e-mail or by phone 888-465-3474.
As of today there were 205 Master Angler catches registered in 2008. These are fish caught and released at all of our lodges and remote cabin destinations since mid-June 2009. There were 129 Pike (63%) and 76 (37%) Walleye.
We send Master Angler data and photos (when we have them), to the Ontario Federation of Hunters and Anglers, who will register each angler's catch and release in their official records, and send certificates and pins to those they consider True Trophies.
For more details about our past season, click here and read or download Master Angler 08 Analysis.
I look forward to handing out more of those Master Angler pins in 2009 and watching those big smiles from our many anglers who catch the big Pike and Walleye. |

Become a Vested Partner in 2009!

We are preparing a full colour wall calendar for 2009 and we're gathering photos now.
The Wilderness North Calendar will be mailed to guests and special friends of Wilderness North in mid-December. In addition to photos of scenes from Ontario's Boreal forests, and of guest trips to our remote cabin destinations and full service lodges, these calendars will have important information for 2009 visitors: daily Solunar ratings, sunrise/moonrise sunset/moonset times, moon phase information, temperature and rainfall data, fishing license information, Canadian and US holidays, and wildlife viewing, birding and angling tips.
And here's where you come in. Send us up to three photos (.jpg) from your past trip(s). These would be photos that you feel would look great on our 2009 calendar - photos you are willing to share with others. If we choose your photo for a page in the calendar, you will receive a Wilderness North Logo Vest, so you will be "lookin' good" and you can tell everyone how you got it free.
If your photo makes the cover, you will win an additional $250 shopping spree in our gift shops. We plan to open our online gift shop in 2009 as well. Also drop us a note about the kind of information you would like to see included as part of this 8-1/2 by 11 inch 2009 calendar. Our goal is to make an E-Version and desk top photos available to anyone as well. So join in the fun. Send an e-mail now, and we will respond with all the instructions and all the information you'll need to send us your photos and your ideas. Don't forget we'll need your full name and phone number(s) to get back in touch with you.
We look forward to hearing from you soon. Deadline for the photo submission is October 24th.
