Season Opener - At Last! ...by Alan Cheeseman

The ice is finally gone! Well, not at our Makokibatan Lodge, however, I think that will happen by Saturday.
All of our crews are in. Armstrong Base is open and Waweig Lake is free of ice (at-last) and we have a few anglers at our Zig Zag Remote Cabin. They report that the fishing is great with aggressive shallow Northern Pike, and many of the female Walleyes still filled with eggs since the water temp has not hit 7c (45f) the preferred spawning temp. So its catch-photo-and back they go - oh so gently. Listen now to Alan's (1:54) mini podcast. ____________________________________________________
So what's with the weather? Graham Saunders, our official weather man tells us more in his mini podcast, explaining exactly how "Ice-Out" works, and whether the cold spring temps and high water conditions will affect the summer weather.
Many of our guests who were scheduled to be at their adventure destination last weekend moved their dates - wisely - and so official opening will likely occur this Memorial Day weekend. Last weekend - Victoria Day - here in Canada, was cold and rainy, so we hope the U.S. holiday brings us better weather luck. Graham thinks so, with forecast temperatures reaching the low 70's. Listen now to the (3:45) mini podcast.

Wilderness North Chosen by AYA!
Imagine one adult and two young people competing as a team to catch Walleye (Pickerell) and winning boats, motors, and a chance to win trips to Miminiska Lodge and Walt Disney World. Well it's true. AYA - Angler Young Angler is an organization that makes that dream come true, and Wilderness North has been selected as the Canadian destination alongside Walt Disney World as the U.S. trip to be awarded to the Grand Prize winner this coming August in Kenora, Ontario. Lund Boats, and Lund Boat Dealers support the tournaments, where the largest combined weight of three Walleye determines regional winners, who then move on to the August 16th championship. Thunder Bay is the June 28th, stop on the twenty event circuit. Michelle Trudeau, Executive Director of AYA, and Randy Neufeld of North Country Cycle talk to Wilderness North's Marilyn Blackmon and serve up more details during this mini podcast. (6:10) You may listen now.
