Kruisin' with Krista
I think it was Horace Greeley, who said, "Go west young man go west!" Well, that was when the territorties of the U.S. were being opened up. However, we know that once many of our guests who are traveling by car enter Canada at the Soo Locks, they too "Go West" - so here's a tip.
Alan and I recently stayed a great little B&B in Rossport, ON. It's called Island Shores B&B and is operated by Jerry and Nanette Price. Clean rooms, a quiet setting with room for six, and the views are great. In addition, we ate at The Serendipty. Again we were surprised with great food, and service; and a harbour view to set the scene.

Rossport is about six hours from the Soo, and two hours from Thunder Bay. There's more information in the mini-podcast, listen to it here.

Countdown to Opening ...by Alan Cheeseman
I know the photo in our header looks like Winter... but believe me, Spring is on the way.
The photo was taken at our big Makokibatan Lodge dock project - up on the Albany River. Built on rock bunkers - yes we carry each rock into place - the dock will "settle in" once the ice becomes water. So we are waiting for Ice Out, which may be a little late above the 50th parallel at our Albany River lodges and remote cabins.
Here in Thunder Bay, we have had many warm days, and "Ice Out" was complete- May 5th - and now we're just waiting for Ice Out at our Ogoki River watershed destinations. First guests arrive for this weekend, so it could be close. We do have an alternative destination plan in place if we can NOT get the planes into those very northern Albany River adventure destinations. So it's all in the hands of Mother Nature :) - and she can be moody. We talked to Meteorologist Graham Saunders to determine "why" the late Ice Out. Listen to the podcast now.
With our many remodeling projects completed, our staff arriving every day, our Thunder Bay Guest Welcome Center open, we have never been more "ready" to start another season and look forward to welcoming our many friends and guests.
Our newly redesigned Trip Planning Guide, is available at the website, with lots of links to help you prepare for your own Fly In Adventure...and our trip planners are ready to tell you more about your choices for open dates still available in 2008 - so if you still want to plan a trip for this summer, give us a call. 888-465-3474 (FISH)

Project Healing Waters Update!
Neil Frustaglio is from Green Bay, Wisconsin. He is among the U.S. and Canadian soldiers who will be our guests in July for the Project Healing Waters "Healing On The Albany" event at our Miminiska Lodge. Your contributions and help are still needed to get these wounded soldiers to the event. There is a complete explanation at our website. Just today we received a pledge of $5000 dollars from Dallas Bergl, CEO of Inova Federal Credit Union, to add to the many gifts of support for our project. We are deeply grateful. You can click on the PHW logo at the bottom of this newsletter to learn more. CMA award winner Trace Adkins has even written and recorded a song about these brave men and women, and you can listen to that song by clicking on the LISTEN button at the very bottom of the page. If you would like to learn more about Neil, and hear his story, we have his Mini-Podcast ready to roll. You may listen now to his 4 minute interview.

Chris Clemmons' "Open Letter" On Walleye Success
Chris Clemmons has been sending e-mails back and forth to a group of guests coming up from the south. They are making their first trip to the "northland" and have a lot of great questions about transferring and adapting fishing skills and techniques they use for Bass and Crappie, to Northerns and Walleyes. Chris, as you may recall, is our "go to" member of the Resource Writers Team on Walleye fishing. The information he has shared in his e-mails will likely help a novice or veteran increase their catch-to-cast ratios. We have posted all of his e-mails at our download page of the website, in an article called "Open Letter on Walleye Fishing" for you to read, print, or load onto your computer. Chris chats with us in his Mini-Podcast as he zeros in on "Worm Harness" and "Drop Shot" fishing. Listen now to his 4 minute interview.

Jenni is Ready for Spring Too
Dr. Jenni McDermid, Wildlife Conservation Society of Canada fish research associate, can't wait to get back in the wilderness. You may recall we chatted with her in February about a Lake Trout study she is doing in the Thunder Bay area. Well she's ready with her update on that winter Lake Trout study, and she's ready to get back in the field to begin sample gathering on a project designed to measure the impact of dams on Sturgeon populations. Jenni talks about both projects in her Mini-Podcast. It runs 4 minutes and you can listen to it now.
