Healing On The Albany

On April 1, 2008 we announced our "Healing on the Albany" event for July 12-20. We are welcoming U.S. and Canadian soldiers to our Miminiska Lodge, to add the cool green boreal forests and crystal clear waters of Northwestern Ontario to their rehabilitation, where fishing is a center piece of the healing process. Countdown to Opening ...by Alan Cheeseman
Pulled in every direction! Ever had that feeling? We all have. Our first guests arrive in less than a month. WHEW!
This week we're going to plan "B" on the dock building project at Makokibatan Lodge. I'll tell you more on the podcast.
We are watching the weather, with very warm days, the start of the "ice out" is definitely happening.
We are counting up the contributions to our Project Healing Waters event scheduled for July 12-20, this summer. If you missed our last newsletter and podcast, we announced our affiliation with Project Healing Waters, a non profit group that introduces injured soldiers returning from the battlefield to fly and spincasting fishing as part of their rehab. Your calls, and gifts are coming in and we are most grateful. On this week's podcast you'll meet Ed Newby, a retired airline pilot who is working hard to get transportation for the soldiers coming up from the U.S. - Thanks Ed. You can learn more about Project Healing waters and make a contribution too.
This week, we are contacting each arriving guest for May 2008, with a special "check list" e-mail so their trip will get off to a great start. Planning for an adventure is really quite easy, our new and improved Trip Planning Guide is available at the website.
Today we celebrate Earth Day by remembering that:
"We cannot and do not change the environment, we change our behaviour, and the environment thanks us by staying pure and green."
That's something we think about a lot.

Clean Hands & Quick Campfires!
Scott Earl Smith, the Canadian Editor for American Fly Fishing Magazine, has written a special article for us and posted it to our website's download page. Its called An Angler's Spring Cleaning Project. Scott discusses what you can do NOW, to be prepared for a future trip into the wilderness. And though Scott is an accomplisted Fly Angler and guide, his common sense choices of what to carry along on a trip into the boreal forest are applicable to everyone. He says hand sanitizer that is mostly alcohol, serves to keep your hands clean and germ free, AND as a great camp fire starter - even in the cold and rain. Hear Scott on this week's podcast, or read his article on-line or download it from our website download files.

About Lake Levels Everyone asks about snow levels, anticipated rains, and ice depths when they think about how much water will be in their destination's lake when they arrive for their adventure. With Lake Superior's water levels at all time lows, there is one other thing to add to the formula - "When did the lake freeze?"
Graham Saunders, professor of meteorology at Lakehead University here in Thunder Bay, and weather commentator for the Thunder Bay Chronicle Journal says that while "ice out" is interesting, "ice on" is more important. It seems that the earlier the ice forms on lakes, the more protection they have from evaporation, and it's evaporation in the fall that robs area lakes of their water.
With global warming, "ice on" keeps getting later and later.
His article- "A Slice of Ice" -appeared in Superior Outdoors Magazine's Winter Edition.

Tie Your Own Leaders and Make Them Tooth Proof !
An American company in Coatesville, PA is marketing a product that allows anglers to literally "tie" their own leaders. Two types of "Tooth Proof" leader materials are available: stainless steel and titanium. The titanium is by far more flexible and less likely to kink on a big strike thus cutting down on re-rig time.
On our podcast, Michele Stutzman talks about the product and the key benefit of working top water lures - like Zara Spooks - without having heavy leaders disrupt their action, or sink their noses. Tooth Proof products are available at Cabelas stores or catalog - or go to this website to learn more.
