Can Organizing Pay for Itself?
I've often said that getting
organized can save money. While working with That's Neat! Organizing, clients
have saved by finding money in the form of uncashed checks, stock certificates, and even a
misplaced laptop. They also avoid buying duplicates if they know what they have
and can find it easily. Recently a client illustrated another way to save by
getting organized. When I first met these clients they rented two storage units each month for their extra things, and their goal was to
pair down enough to only need one unit. Working together we met that goal, and they saw the
savings immediately: only one storage unit rental payment per month. After seeing how well that worked, they set a
new goal: get rid of the storage unit completely. It took a while but over time they sorted, purged, donated,
sold and gave away all that they could. The clients still had some items to figure out, but decided there wasn't enough to keep the
unit. They stopped paying for storage and moved the remaining items to their garage.
Storing things in the garage worked for a few months but as winter was around the corner, they
set another goal: clear the garage and park the cars inside. Now we turned our attention to what was left in the garage.
Again, they sorted, purged, donated, sold and gave away all that they
could. Their clear goal - park the cars in
the garage - really motivated these clients to make some of the harder decisions. They were thrilled to be able to use the garage again.
Garage sorting in progress. Garage ready for cars! From two storage units to one...from
one unit to none...from a full garage to a useable garage. Their
organizing paid for itself. |

Resources: Charitable Organizations
If you are purging your possessions this fall, consider making a charitable donation of your unwanted items. You may even get a tax write-off in the process. Some organizations to consider:
