Greetings!

With the lazy days of summer starting to fade and a busy fall around the corner, I've been taking a fresh look at how to better use my time. This edition of The Neat Sheet shares the strategies I'm using; let me know if they work for you!

Fall is also "back-to-school" time for many families. Even if you don't have a child in school, read on to see how the kindergarten classroom provides a simple model for staying organized.

Best,
Elizabeth

Time Flies

Like many of you I'm constantly juggling multiple roles and priorities throughout the day as I try to get "everything" done: can I really take my daughter to ballet, write an article, answer email, and work with a client...all within eight hours? To be more realistic with my time, here are some strategies I'm trying to use:

  • Put like with like. A key theory of organizing, this works with your time too: if you have errands to do, do several at the same time while you are out. If you have calls to make, pick up the phone and go through your list.
  • Use a calendar! Whether electronic or paper, calendars are an amazing - and often underutilized - time management tool. For years I only noted doctor's appointments and meetings in my calendar. Now I use my calendar to block out time to work on projects (personal and professional), schedule reminders for upcoming tasks, and record my weekly to-do lists.
  • Have a weekly check in. Set aside a regular time to review and plan your schedule for the week. If you have a family, designate a time when everyone "syncs" their calendars and knows what is coming up for the week.
  • Delete or delegate tasks. If you are feeling overwhelmed take a good look at your to-do list: Are there volunteer commitments you are keeping but aren't really interested in any more? Can you hire someone to help finish that nagging home improvement project? Can your family help more around the house? Trim activities that you don't enjoy doing and delegate tasks if possible. Smart leaders know when to get help from capable others!
