September 2012
Greetings!,

The People's Health Clinic wants the community to know what we're about, and this month's story about Mat Lints is a good example of the variety of services the Clinic can provide a local resident without health insurance. It's not enough to see patients in our Clinic - for a long time we've known we have to take the next steps with our patients -  to make sure they find solutions to the medical problems they come to us with. It is the daily work of our small staff to find access to affordable diagnostic testing and medications, recruit providers to offer a variety of care in and outside of the Clinic, and even make referrals to critical  non-medical resources.

While there are some things we DON'T currently do - emergency or urgent care, dental care - we want uninsured residents to start with us first - when they aren't sure where to turn.

Hopeful for Sochi 2014 Games, Grateful for People's Health

How can I do justice to the story of Mat Lints?  Olympic hopeful in long-track speed skating, long-time local, a man with unremitting and confounding pain who now considers the doctors and staff of the People's Health Clinic as dear friends.  Bear with me and meet a remarkable person - passionate, open-hearted and strong.

Last year Mat started to feel excruciating pain in his abdomen and knew something was terribly wrong.  His first attempts to seek help only frustrated him. As Utahns, we have seen the financial challenges often faced by local Olympic hopefuls - when they take a break from 8-12-hour training days, it is only to rehydrate, feed the body, and raise money to chase their dreams.  "Poverty level living" is how Mat describes it.
With no health insurance, Mat found his pursuit of wellness blocked by the impossible expense of doctor visits, tests
and procedures.  At his wit's end, even when he came for his first appointment at the People's Health Clinic, he was wary.  "What could they possibly do for me? I knew this was going to take more than an office visit."

But then, for a small requested donation, he saw Staff Physician John Hanrahan, who, according to Mat, "spent all the time I needed that day, talking about my possible diagnosis and hearing about my passion for speed skating. He made me promise to think only about getting better - that the Clinic would help me figure it all out. He became my friend that day."

Read the rest of Mat's story here.
