Greetings!
Every day, we celebrate people like you who give of your time, talent and treasure to make healthcare access for our neighbors without insurance a reality.
One person you helped this month is "Kevin". He is grateful for caring doctors and a trusted medical home. Kevin's story would have had a life-altering ending without your support. Be sure to read Kevin's story below.
In this holiday season, we wish you and your family the best of health. Thank you for generously sharing the gift of health with others in so many ways!

Doctors at the People's Health Clinic
treat people with this insidious disease
every day - multiple times a day.
|
Whether Type 1 or Type 2 diabetes, whether caused by genetics or infection, or by lifestyle, diabetes damages the blood vessels, increasing the risk of cardiovasular disease twofold. Years of uncontrolled diabetes can result in blindness, kidney failure, and painful nerve damage. The vascular and nerve damage can require amputation of the feet.
The physicians at the People's Health Clinic are very serious about diagnosing and treating diabetes.
One of the many people you have helped recently is "Kevin", who nervously checked into his appointment two weeks ago with Dr. Robert (Bob) Pellegrine, the People's Health Clinic Medical Director. You see, Kevin has Type I Diabetes which, until he found this clinic, had been largely unmanaged and likely present since childhood.
So, after years of uncontrolled episodes of spiking and plunging blood sugar levels, losing consciousness and relying on calls to 911, Kevin has worked with Dr. Bob to stabilize his disease. Kevin receives coaching about monitoring his blood sugar and adjusting doses of insulin and has learned important warning signs.
When Kevin noticed an infection building in his toe several weeks ago, he recognized the danger of waiting. And, most importantly, he now had a trusted and affordable medical home.
After a round of antibiotics didn't do the trick, Dr. Bob called in volunteer Plastic Surgeon Dr. David Teasley. They determined that the toenail needed to be removed to cure the infection, and Dr. Teasley performed the procedure on the spot. That may have saved Kevin's toe, and possibly his entire foot, from amputation.
Every day our neighbors come to the Clinic for help with small or life-altering health problems. With your support - as volunteers and funders - our community is healthier and works better for all. Thank you!

Wondering about Diabetes......
Type 1 diabetes is an auto-immune disease
that can occur at any age. It is caused by genetic and, possibly, environmental factors.
Type 2 diabetes is sometimes called
insulin-resistant diabetes. The major cause is increased fat tissue, which creates inflammatory molecules that make the body resistant to the
action of insulin. The pancreas tries to keep up
by producing more and more insulin,
but eventually it can't.
Gestational diabetes is an increasingly prevalent
form of diabetes that develops in one in seven pregnancies. After the child is born, the disease
may or may not go away.
How about you? Are you at risk?
Are you physically inactive?
What type of foods do you eat? High-calorie?
High fat? High carbohydrate?
Is there a history of diabetes in your family?
Is your memory selective
when it comes to what you ate?

Dear Food Diary......
When was the last time you had a physical?
Currently, one in ten Americans has diabetes. By 2050, the Centers for Disease Control projects one in three Americans will have the disease. While awareness has increased in the US, 25 percent of people with diabetes don't even know they have it.

11.11.11 - A Huge Success!
|
|
We are grateful for the out-pouring of community support on 11.11.11 through the Live PC Give PC campaign and our annual Community Celebration, this year at the Blind Dog.
Live PC Give PC was a great success for the community and for our work at the People's Health Clinic. Over $20,000 came to the Clinic directly through the PC Foundation event that day.
Later at the Blind Dog, we celebrated with those who care for the Clinic and its mission -committed to good health since 2000. We had a great time - food, drink, music, and just enough words to inspire.
By the end of the day 11.11.11 - over $30,000 had been raised for patients. Grateful indeed!
It was so good to enjoy the company of supporters, volunteers and staff. More photos coming soon on Facebook...
