Another Way to Volunteer

          Lynne Feingold Brought Strong

      Interpreter Skills to PHC

         Establish a three-way conversation.

         Search for key information.

Remove all judgment from your thinking.

These are a few of the goals Lynne Feingold tries to keep in mind as she interprets for Spanish-speaking patients at PHC.  "It's a huge responsibility", she says.  "Some of our patients are in really hard situations.  They are putting a lot of trust in you by telling their story, and they count on you to relay it accurately to the doctor."

Lynne, or Lulu as we know her, is an Americorps volunteer who is leaving us at the end of July, her term in the program over.  Her primary duties were interpretation and patient education.    Lulu loves to improve her medical and Spanish knowledge, so she especially enjoys interpreting for a variety of specialists like Babbie Lester, naturopathic physician, and Donna Wahoff-Stice, Diabetes specialist.

Lulu has enjoyed the sense of community and the cheerful cooperation of staff and volunteers.  "We're all here for one purpose, and that really shows."  We'll miss Lulu a lot, and wish her well in her graduate program in Anthropology at  Durham University.

The Care You've Made Possible

Sam came in occasionally to check his asthma and get his medication updated.  But one day he came in feeling awful and it was obvious that something serious was going on.   Volunteer physician John Houchins was alarmed by Sam's extreme weight loss and yellowing eyes.  He arranged for Sam to be transported immediately to the Park City Medical Center, where blood tests showed plummeting hemoglobin levels.  Sam received transfusions immediately and spent several days in the hospital.

Because Sam considered People's Health his medical home and he knew to come in when he didn't feel right, PHC's volunteer physician was able to act quickly to avoid a potentially serious situation. Sam is back in good health and on the job.

Volunteer of the Month

Joanna Kahn, MPT

Physical Therapist

We thank Joanna Kahn MPT for showing PHC patients the way to a healthier life during her twice-monthly stints at the Clinic.  She says she's seen the impact poor health can have on people's lives - loss of job, bankruptcies - poor health can pull us down.  She likes helping the behind-the-scenes workers stay on the job and feeling good.

Joanna, who owns PersonalPT, is very interested in prevention. As this writer sits working on  this piece, I've  enjoyed one of Joanna's videos -  "Desk Exercises".  I feel better already.
