A Very Lucky Little Girl
Paula is a 10-year-old whose parents brought her to the Clinic one day with a sore throat. Volunteer pediatrician Guy LaMere noted she had an enlarged thyroid, and subsequent testing diagnosed Graves Disease, a serious autoimmune condition. Through consultation with Medical Director Bob Pellegrine and volunteer endocrinologist Robert Jones, Paula was referred to the Primary Children's Pediatric Endocrinology Department for evaluation. A treatment plan was established, with medication that would require ongoing monitoring by a specialist. Since Dr. Jones is a regular volunteer, Paula has been able to receive her treatments at PHC, rather than making trips to Salt Lake City for costly care. She is making steady progress and she and her parents and the Clinic are grateful for the teamwork of our volunteer specialists.

Fireman Andy Avery
Another volunteer shows there are many ways to help!

What do you do when your infant or toddler starts choking? How does a Spanish speaker make her needs understood when calling 911, where a Spanish option is not immediately available? Spanish-speaking Fireman Andy Avery has found an eager audience for his presentation on family safety and basic first aid. They are the students in the Spanish prenatal series at PHC, sponsored by Holy Cross Ministries.
One session of each 7-week series is devoted to Andy's message - you can take charge of your family's safety. Students learn basic CPR for infants and adults - although it's not an official course, Andy takes the opportunity to teach the basics and to let the mothers-to-be practice with dummies. And first aid for bleeding, recognizing and responding to seizures, "stop, drop and roll", using smoke detectors - this is the information a young mother needs to keep the family safe. We thank Andy and the Park City Fire District for bringing this great program to PHC. |
