The People's Health Clinic NewsletterApril 2011
Greetings!

As I wrote last month:  "Neath the snows of March (now substitute 'April') are the stirrings of spring."  Well, aren't we all just patient folks, confident that the green grass and warm breezes will indeed arrive!

In the meantime, PHC keeps charging forth - with more patients and volunteers, expanded community partnerships, and exciting new events.

Overheard.......

"I think when you get volunteers together who are there because of their passion about their work, it's a special thing.  PHC is a very happy place - people are there because they want to be.  If you can volunteer, join us. Or if you are uninsured and pregnant, don't be shy.  It's the place to come."

- Sara Simonsen, Certified Nurse Midwife, when asked on

PCTV's Mountain Morning Show what it's like to volunteer at PHC.

PHC Volunteers Are Off & Running

Three Just Accepted into Medical Programs

Starting in May, Spencer Jenkins will be studying nursing at the University of Utah.  He has been doing phlebotomy for PHC.

Lindsey Gauderer, who takes vitals and does phlebotomy for us on Wednesdays, has been accepted into University of Vermont's Master's in Nursing Program.

Jackie Simonis has been accepted into the U's Medical School. Jackie has volunteered doing vitals and eye exams with us during Dr. Tabin's eye clinic.  PHC also sponsored her for "Bridging the Gap", a medical interpreter course, in which she participated in last spring.

We're so proud of these young people.  We hope their experience at PHC has helped them along their paths - they have been of tremendous help to Clinic patients during their time here.

April Volunteer

Kristen DelMastro

Kristen De.

Kristen joined the clinic in June of 2010 and has proven to be a wonderful addition to our volunteer family.  Taking vitals and rooming patients while using her Spanish skills, she's become a wonderful and reliable asset. Kristen has a Bachelor of Science in Neuroscience from Muhlenberg College, Allentown, PA and is working for The Brain Institute at University of Utah.  She has plans to apply to a Physician Assistant Program or Medical School.

More Restaurants Coming on Board

Twenty percent of PHC patients are employed by local restaurants.  Our Restaurant Partners program offers up-to-date clinic info for employers to share with their staff, and asks for a donation based on the size of the restaurant.

These Restaurant Partners signed up since last month ~

What do we do when a patient's needs can't be met in our Clinic?

~Electrocardiogram for a patient with chest pain ~ MRI for a persistent shoulder problem ~ Cancer treatment ~ Financial assistance for expensive medications ~

PHC staff and volunteer doctors and their patients would be very disheartened if there were no good resources when needs like these came up.  So Mariely Ferrer, PHC Clinic Coordinator, spends a good part of each day making things happen for patients. And not only does she locate the service, but she helps patients qualify if a financial need must be shown.

A few of the wonderful and willing partners in the community are:

-IHC whose Voucher Program provides diagnostic testing such as MRI, CT, stress test, and EKGs for qualifying patients

-Summit County Health Dept. for family planning and women's cancer screenings

-local doctors whose practice requires special equipment see patients at reduced cost in their own offices, such as David Teasley, Heiden Orthopedics, and Gordon Olson

-pharmacies & drug manufacturers with special programs for lower-income people

According to Mariely, "most patients would not know where to turn for these more serious needs.  And they need someone to help them navigate the appointments and the paperwork.  We consider that a worthy part of our mission."

Mariely Ferrer spends a lot of time finding help for patients beyond our walls.

Local Preschoolers Share Their Old Friends

Making old books new for Clinic patients

Last month we told you about the efforts of three local preschools to bring books to PHC patient families.  Well, the boxes have been pouring through the doors!

Thanks to Park City Cooperative Preschool, Soaring Wings Montessori School and Shining Stars Preschools for collecting hundreds of books for babies, toddlers and preschoolers.  Those are the books we go through quickly, and the kids were so generous and brave to part with some old friends!

The 2011 Spring Cocktail Contest is History but there's "No Thyme Like the Present"

This year's winning cocktail is called just that - "No Thyme Like the Present" - created by Shabu bartender Jeff Ferguson. See the winning recipe here.

Each year, this rousing competition and party has been put on by the Park City Area Restaurant Association to benefit PHC, where so many restaurant employees seek medical care. This year's donation is over $1200. And this year, for the first time, a second contest will be held in October to select a winter drink.

Great thanks to Deer Valley for hosting the event at Edgar's Beer and Spirits.
