CALL TO ACTION
Help PHC Earn  Promontory Foundation's $4,000 Challenge Grant
We have until September 30 to match an offer of $4000.  The  Foundation directs giving by Promontory Club members to worthy local charities, and we're thrilled to be included.

If you haven't given this year, this would be a great time!  If you've already given, take a few minutes and tell a friend about PHC.

 of the Month
~Elizabeth Jacobsen~

Elizabeth started  with PHC shortly after the move into our new building.  She has been wonderful to have around and willing to help in any way, taking vital signs and filing patient charts.  Elizabeth has been very consistent with volunteering for our OB clinic on Wednesdays,; therefore, many patients know her.  As in any medical office, having familiar faces around is very comforting.  Thank you Elizabeth, for volunteering your time with PHC  patients.

Greetings!

The Clinic is buzzing this Thursday morning - patients here with all sorts of needs, several physicians, phlebotomists, people checking patients in and taking vital signs, clerical volunteers. We're so grateful to them all.  I'm struck by the feeling of the place - our Clinic Coordinator hugging a patient who hasn't been in for a while, volunteers joking with staff or reassuring a young patient that the thermometer won't hurt in her ear.  Good stuff for people who really need it.

How can you help keep this going? Think about an early (dare we say it?!) autumn afternoon of golf to benefit PHC.  Read below for details.   Respond to our call to action - meeting a matching grant from the Promontory Foundation. And read or watch our providers to get their take on what PHC does.  Then go tell a few friends about us!

Volunteer Oncologist Dr. Ann Eisenbraun Focuses on Preventive Medicine at PHC
Ann E. Some serious illnesses show no symptoms until they become dangerous. Dr. Ann Eisenbraun tells how a recent patient with severe hypertension could have suffered a stroke, heart attack or kidney failure had it gone undetected.  At a visit for a separate reason, the volunteer who checked her blood pressure was alarmed at the 160/110 reading and called it to Dr. Ann's attention.  Now the patient's hypertension is under control -a lucky break.
Though she is an oncologist, Dr. Eisenbraun expected to treat head colds and rashes at PHC.  Yet severe anemia, a colostatic pregnancy (a complication that can threaten the baby) and even ovarian cancer are just a few of the other serious conditions local residents have brought to her attention at the Clinic in the last seven months.
She has also seen firsthand what those who study the uninsured know very well: people without health insurance tend not to get annual physicals.  Many think, "Why spend a lot of money to find out I have a condition I can't afford to treat?"  It's sort of a "no news is good news" approach, but many people have no other option.  Thankfully, residents of Summit and Wasatch County are being encouraged to come to PHC for a checkup before they are sick.
Checks for diabetes, hypertension and high cholesterol are part of PHC exams when indicated, and standard in an annual checkup.  For women, breast exams are standard, and funding is being sought to arrange for every female patient over 40 to have a yearly mammogram.  As always, patients can be screened for cervical cancer next door at the Summit County Health Department.
"As an oncologist, I usually see people who have not had these diagnostic tests.  Here I can help prevent cancers."

Summer Food Safety
food vendor As we approach Miners' Day, many of us are still enjoying the festivals and fairs of summer.  Drawn by the chance to be outdoors, the activities, the games, and especially the FOOD, it's a good idea to check out the safety of what we consume.

Some questions to consider:
Does the vendor have a tidy workstation?
Does the vendor have a sink for employee handwashing?
Do the employees wear gloves or tongs to serve food?
Is there refrigeration onsite for raw or pre-cooked food?
Has the vendor been inspected?
