We may not be as big (thank goodness), but we're here every week.....
Last Sunday's Parade Magazine showcased "The Nation's Biggest Free Clinic", the sixth in a series of clinics being held at the convention center in Atlanta. 1,050 volunteers have served over 8,000 people since The National Association of Free Clinics, of which PHC is a member, started the clinics in September. According to the Association, "even though up to 32 million Americans will eventually be added to the rolls of the insured because of the recently passed federal healthcare reform, that will still leave about 15 million people who need low- or no-cost medical treatment."
One patient interviewed at the mega-clinic has Type 2 diabetes and high blood pressure, and said, "I never thought in a million years I'd be waiting in a convention center to see a doctor, but I'm as grateful as I can be to be here."
How amazing that, here on the Wasatch Back, donors and volunteers like you have created a place where people can receive immediate and ongoing medical care every week!

Park City Medical Center is Named "Stroke Receiving Center"
When minutes count, miles matter. That's why Summit County residents will be happy to know that our neighbor, PCMC, is now a designated Stroke Receiving Center.
The Bureau of Emergency Medical Services and Preparedness recently surveyed Park City Medical Center and awarded the hospital this designation. Now residents will have more immediate access to care.
Park City Medical Center is the only designated stroke receiving center in Summit and Wasatch Counties. "Two million brain cells die every minute during a stroke, increasing the risk of permanent brain damage, disability or death. Eighty-five percent of strokes are caused by a blood clot that forms in an artery of the heart and goes to the brain. When the blood flow stops, brain cells begin to die," notes Hospital spokeswoman, Amy Roberts. "That's why it's so critical to get care as quickly as possible."
Stroke attacks affect 780,000 people a year and are the third leading cause of death among adults. Up to 500,000 strokes could be prevented through better lifestyle choices like not smoking, exercising regularly, and eating a healthy diet.

Free Family Nutrition Series to be Taught in Spanish
PHC Clinic Coordinator, Mariely Ferrer, will begin a series of nutrition classes in June. In collaboration with Alliance Community Services, the 5-week series is for families with children aged 8-14. Parents and children will start the series together, then will split into two groups to better address the needs of each.
With the growth in obesity and related chronic diseases such as diabetes, People's Health is expanding its educational programs. This class is a great addition. Anyone interested can call the Clinic at (435) 333-1850. We appreciate any efforts you can make to spread the word about this great opportunity. |
