A Look Inside the New Building
 by Sarah Klingenstein

Waiting Room
Charlie Wintzer, PHC Board member and our construction liaison with Summit County,  took me for a tour of the inside of the new County Health/ PHC building - WOW! Suddenly I understood why PHC staff was so excited when they returned from their  recent tour.  There are spacious exam rooms and ample space for providers to consult, and light streamed in through large windows.

Charlie is shown above standing in the shared waiting room in front of the frames of the side-by-side reception desks for PHC and Summit County.

Below is the Patient Education Room, a space newly allocated to PHC, which will help us increase our efforts in Preventative Health.

As we walked around the building, Charlie shared his excitement about the Clinic's relationship with Summit County. "It's been a pleasure working on this innovative partnership with County officials, and we really look forward to the good work we can do together when the new facililty opens in November."

Community Health Summit Held at PHC to Explore Upcoming Changes to Clinic

Many of us are fortunate enough to have a long-term relationship with a doctor or clinic where all our family members have gone for years of comprehensive care.  The uninsured and under-insured rarely find that "medical home", a place that knows them and their history, that is compassionate and culturally sensitive, where care is comprehensive and coordinated.  For years local pediatrician Dr. Kathy Ostler has seen the need for a "medical home" in the Park City area.   Says Dr. Ostler, "As I looked around the community, one clinic stood out as possessing many of the aspects of a medical home - People's Health". Recently she and Judy Sobin, PHC Executive Director, joined forces to explore the possibilities.

On Wednesday, May 6, PHC held a Community Health Summit.  With 35 medical and community leaders in attendance, the group discussed the Clinic's application to become a Federally Qualified Community Health Center.  They discussed unmet health goals for the underserved, including mental health and dental care.   With the input of Bette Vierra and Kevin McCulley of The Association of Utah Community Health Centers (AUCH) and Sister Suzanne Brennan of Holy Cross Ministries, participants talked over the advantages and challenges of pursuing this federal designation.

Thanks to the many people who came to share their ideas that night.  We are only sorry no one thought to bring the camera!

Clinic Coordinator Mariely Ferrer Shares a Patient Story

"Every week we see patients whose stories touch us.  These patients are the ones who cause us to say, 'Thank goodness People's Health is here!'  I will tell you about a woman we are currently seeing in the Clinic.  When Alice first visited one of our doctors, she could not discuss her symptoms or current situation without breaking down.  Alice is a Park City resident who had worked for a long time for a local company, lost her job in 2008 due to cutbacks, and most recently her unemployment benefits ran out.  She was exhausted and ill with multiple symptoms she did not understand and her living situation was on the brink. Thanks to the advice of a friend, she finally came to PHC.  The doctor determined she was suffering from diabetes, hypertension, and severe depression.

"Alice has been back for three return visits with one of our doctors, as well as weekly meetings with Karen Christian, our volunteer psychiatrist.  The look on her face tells the whole story - she is so relieved, so happy to have taken steps towards feeling better, physically and emotionally.  She is pursuing several job possibilities and feels hopeful again about her life.  This is the work that PHC does that makes such a difference in the world."

Dr. Geoff Tabin Combines Two Passions and Does a World of Good

An early love of mountaineering coupled with his interest in ophthalmology led Geoff Tabin to combine two passions into a fascinating and busy life. Dr. Tabin MD is Professor of Ophthalmology at the Moran Eye Center at the University of Utah and cofounder of the Himalayan Cataract Project, which for over 20 years has worked to eliminate blindness in the developing world.

Tabin, a Park City resident, sees patients during our Thursday Chronic Disease Clinics once a month. People with Diabetes are at risk for many complications, including eye diseases that cause severe vision loss and even blindness.

"At People's Health I see problems related to lack of eye care as well as the results of high blood pressure and diabetes. I diagnose and arrange for surgery including cataracts and diabetic pathologies. I provide free reading glasses for those who are unable to afford them. The population I see has a great need for diagnoses and care of their eye conditions and complaints. It is my privilege as part of the Park City community to provide this care to my neighbors in need."
