John Hanrahan MD Returns as Interim Executive Director
To many people, the face of The People's Health Clinic has been Dr. John Hanrahan. One of the founders of the Clinic, John was active for many years as Volunteer Medical Director, Volunteer Executive Director, and Board member. After several years' hiatus, John rejoined the Board of Directors in 2007 and soon was chairing the Clinic's Medical Committee. After the departure of Executive Director Andrew Sipherd in July of this year, John agreed to step in to the spot temporarily. We are excited to have him involved so closely once again, helping the Clinic to set its course for the next several years of growth and change!

Greetings!
Big news this month! Our vision of a permanent home with the Summit County Health Department is going forward!
PHC & County Sign Lease Agreement To Build PHC's Permanent Home!
The formal signing of an agreement on August 20th marks the end
of almost two years of negotiation and work in bringing Intermountain Health Care, Summit County and
The People's Health Clinic together in a joint effort to create a facility to
meet the medical needs of the uninsured residents of
Summit & Wasatch Counties.
PHC sends kudos to all who have worked so hard to make this visionary project a reality!
PHC & County Officials at Signing
The People's Health Clinic will occupy 5,000 square feet of the County's new 25,000 square foot Health Department Building, located on land near the new Park City Medical Center at Quinn's Junction. The land has been donated by Intermountain Health Care and the County will donate the space to PHC for $1 per year. This generous arrangement represents the County's and IHC's understanding of the value of the services that People's Health provides residents in our area. And it will allow our donated dollars to reach more patients and maintain our high quality of care.
With each patient visit to PHC, the community is healthier and costly Emergency Room visits are kept down, lowering healthcare costs for all of us.

See How PHC Helps Patients Navigate the Often-Daunting World of Healthcare
Jennifer Knight, Family Nurse Practicioner, & Medical Student Volunteer Elizabeth Jacques research and discuss a patient's case.
Tom*, a native Utahn employed in construction in Park City, was suffering from severe weight loss and abdominal pain. After several costly visits to local physicians that resulted in no clear diagnosis, he could no longer pursue a solution. While attending a prenatal visit to People's Health with his wife Amy*, he appeared so ill that Jennifer Knight, PHC's midlevel provider on staff, was alarmed. After examining him and hearing his history, she strongly urged him to undergo a colonoscopy. He refused, being afraid about the cost and very uncomfortable in the world of hospitals and doctors. However, he continued to visit with Jennifer and, with her encouragement over several months, and funding from the Clinic's medical fund and a private donor, he agreed to undergo the test. The specialist, understanding the urgency of his case, rushed Tom in for tests, as well as helping with the cost. The colonoscopy findings were dire: a very large tumor that needed to be removed immediately. Again, the cost made a solution seem impossible. Jennifer and Cecily Huff Smith, PHC's Clinic Director, helped Tom and Amy work with the hospital business office to make the cost of procedure, while burdensome, at least manageable. Tom had the surgery, is doing well and hopes to be working again soon. Jennifer Knight says, "It's about more than just being affordable. Our multicultural approach at PHC makes patients of all economic levels and backgrounds feel safe and welcomed. I attribute Tom's healthy outcome to his willingness to keep coming back."
