Cbeebies Andy Day agrees to be Tumaini PatronAndy Day
Andy Day - TV Cbeebies presenter has agreed to be Patron of our charity.
Andy visited the home in 2009 and was so impressed he decided to hold an event with the support of his colleagues at the BBC studios.     www.bbc.co.uk/cbeebies
The event also supported Cbeebies presenter Sid's charity called Georges fund,
Sarah our Administrator and UK Trustee Steve Turner, went to London to give support on the night.   (see picture below)
Sarah writes:
We arrived at the BBC at 3.30 and Andy signed us into the building. Within five minutes we had seen Boy George! but that is as far as star spotting went.  We helped the Karaoke man take all his equipment up to the bar and helped Andy's fellow presenter Katy Ashworth wrap the raffle prizes. Balloons were blown up and attached to each table with curling ribbon and two of the cbeebies office staff organised the seating arrangement. It was all very professional!!!
At 7.30 things kicked off with a super group of ladies from FASBAT a musical theatre group doing a musical theatre quiz. They sang songs which we had to guess the musical, they read from scripts which we had to guess the next line, etc, etc. It was great fun and really got the crowd going. Next the Karaoke was introduced by Andy and Sid. They both mentioned their chosen charities and thanked everyone for coming. The night continued with gusto and laughter.Cbeebies Fundraise
Platters of canapes were brought round to each table and everyone started singing their hearts out. It was very, very funny and not at all like the normal karaoke nights. As most of those attending worked at the BBC or were performers or friends and family of performers and presenters they were very keen to show off their skills. Even those who couldn't sing had us in fits of laughter with their singing/comedy routine. Then the raffle took place, which instead of the usual raffle tickets being sold, Andy asked everyone to write their names on a note, the larger the note i.e. £5., £10, & £20. the better the chance of winning. The notes
were then collected in a box and drawn out. It didn't matter in the end if it was a fiver or a tenner, the note that was drawn won a prize! they ranged from bottles of wine to theatre tickets to see Jersey Boys
We spent nearly all afternoon and evening with Katy Ashworth. She is the presenter who teaches young children to cook. She is going to tell friends that we are looking for a Project Manager and wishes she could take it on herself. She spent some time in Africa a while back (in the sticks) and can't wait to get back. She wants to learn African drums and wants to teach western music styles in return.
We also met Lynne, the grandmother of George Hayhoe, who sadly lost his battle against Neuroblastoma, a rare form of cancer, on 21st January 2004 aged just 8 years old. They set up a charity called Georges Fund, that Sid was Patron and raising funds for.
Andy plans another fundraising evening in the new year and of course the 3 peaks climb in June. Andy told us that after expenses the total raised was just over £1500.00 which means £750.00 for Tumaini and the same amount for Georges Fund.   http://www.justgiving.com/andy-day
CHILDREN UPDATE
TC1REPORT by Matron on TUMAINI CHILDREN'S HOME: 28/12/09
The month started well with David and Lilian who had been ill and hospitalised, now fully recovered.  A new girl was admitted to the Home.  Her name is Mercy, 9 years old.  She had been at the Home for almost one week when, unfortunately, she fell off the swing on 14/12/09 and fractured her left wrist.  She was admitted to Pandya hospital for reduction of the fracture which was done by Dr. Bebora and was discharged the following day in a cast.

On the 16/12/09 and 23/12/09 the children had a fun time when they went to have their shoes fitted.  Joan and Ian accompanied them and they all now have a pair of black school shoes.
TC2
Christmas day was enjoyable, there was a Christmas party at the Home where the children enjoyed chips and turkey for lunch and played games all afternoon.

All of us at the Home would like to wish all of our friends and supporters a very Happy New Year.
SIRO SCHOOL OPENING

The school will have its official opening on 10th January.
Mary Leadbetter, UK. Chair/trustee flies into Mombasa that morning, and is hoping to make this important event.  Her holiday will be spending time with the children and dealing with negotiations with the Kenyan Trustees to ensure that we are supporting the needs of the home and more importantly the welfare and happiness of the children.
Trustee Danielle Visit
Andy DayUK Trustee Danielle spent a month at her home in Mombasa recently, returning to UK in December. She has given us the following information -
Tumaini Home is doing well; the building work is almost complete. Kenya Trustee Ajit Boghal gave us a guided tour and showed us what was going to be where. The building looks fantastic and spacious inside. The upper storey of the Home will have a library/study room and some of the desks and chairs will be used there. Ajit is going to organise solar water heating panels to be installed during the build as it will be less expensive.  I can see all the building being used by the time I get back in February.
I think we will need to look to see if our funds will allow for us to assist with the furnishing of upper storey.  Where it is financially possible we will endeavour to assist.  The additional cost of employing a project worker would restrict our funding.
The children were thrilled to see us, little Steven came running up with his arms out to be picked up and didn't stop grinning. When he says I love you mama, I just fall apart. Lilian is a cutey and laughs when I sing at her. If you heard me you would know why. Salma is quieter and gets on with things but always insists on shaking hands. Christopher and David were happy to see us. Christopher is on new medication and it has helped his hands and feet a lot. Christina had sent me some money to give them a party "For no reason what so ever". I held the party last Thursday as the children had finished school for the holidays. We had the kid's favourites, popcorn, cheese puffs, biscuits, drinks and a massive cake. They always love that.    I phoned Christina while it was happening and although she was out I left a message on her answer machine, which she has saved. I told the children I was talking to my friend in UK and did they want to say hello... My ear drums vibrated with the shouts of hello Christina.  Bless her she has saved it and keeps playing it back.  During the party David was most unwell, burning hot and shaking.  He was admitted to the hospital the next day with an infection but he also is back home now.  I met the new School Headmaster and some of the teachers.

FUNDRAISING
We are hoping to have a fundraisers promotion page on our website for everyone to see.  If you are organising an event  or adding a "Just Giving" webpage, please let us know well in advance and we will try to promote you.
We are also going to try to mention as many persons who undertake the arduous task of fundraising for the Tumaini home and children, by naming them in the newsletter.
Please e-mail us with details of your event, and later, your favourite photograph.
We would like to take this opportunity to thank you for your continued support.  Without your help we would not be able to assist the funding of the children, the home and now the new school.
2010 is going to be a life changing event for so many more children and the changes at the home and school could not happen without your help.
Sincerely,
Michael O'Leary
