Greetings!!
HazingPrevention.Org is less than a year old, but we have been able to make a tremendous impact in a short amount of time thanks to the generous support of our many sponsors and volunteers. To date we have hosted two educational programs, both of which had more than 50 participants - the National Hazing Symposium: a one day overview of the Bystander Model for prevention, and the Interdisciplinary Institute for hazing intervention: a three-day in-depth look at the Environmental Model for prevention. We also distributed more than 10,000 National Hazing Prevention Week Resource Guides to students and those who work with them nation-wide.
We are gearing up for a new academic year, and soliciting sponsors, as well as other funding sources to bring you the programs and services you have come to rely upon, and some new ones as well. National Hazing Prevention Week is just around the corner, and this year's resource guide contains tips for planning a successful observance on your campus or within your organization, as well as lots of great information to help students move from being bystanders to taking action. It's not too late to sign on as a sponsor and get this year's resource guide. Go here for more information.

Overcoming the Evil of Hazing
Written by: Chad Ellsworth
At the beginning of the week, 24 college students
descended into a basement that for them became the bowels of Hell. They
were dehumanized, humiliated, and ultimately broken. The process began
with the stripping of their clothes, their identities, and their
privacy. It ended after six days with their dignity, humanity, and
well-being having been taken away. In between, the students were awoken
repeatedly throughout the night, were forced to simulate sexual acts
with others, and had bathroom and eating privileges restricted...

National Hazing Prevention Week Webinar
The death of a student is definitely the worst nightmare of any student affairs professional. Allison Swick-Duttine and the other administrators at The State University of New York College at Plattsburgh lived through this nightmare, and hope that by sharing their story, you can avoid the pain of a similar tragedy on your campus. The webinar to be presented during National Hazing Prevention Week 2008 is entitled, "A Hazing Death: Five Years Later & Ten Lessons Learned"
DATE: Tuesday, September 23 TIME: 2 p.m. EST; 75 Minutes in length COST: $50 Register Now Presenters: Allison Swick-Duttine, Director of Fraternity/Sorority Life Steve Matthews, Dean of Students Jerry Lottie, Assistant Chief of University Police The discussion will center around the procedures in place before the death of Dean Jennings, and the lessons learned following this tragedy about investigations, sanctioning and educational efforts. In addition, the panel will share how they were able to change the hazing culture on the campus through effective partnerships and prevention efforts. While this tragedy, and many others have happened in the fraternity/sorority community, we all know that dangerous hazing practices take place in many different types of organizations. Effective prevention and intervention efforts must be campus-wide to have the greatest impact. We encourage you to invite your colleagues from other departments to join you for this webinar, and to view it as a catalyst for making changes on campus before problems escalate. This program IS NOT designed for students, and the content will not be relevant to them. We recommend that students not be included in this program unless they are upper-class, experienced student leaders with a real desire to enact change around this issue. Participation in the webinar is based upon location, not individual. If you have the technology to broadcast the program to a larger audience from one location, please do so. If it is easier to have small groups of people gathered around computers/speaker phones in many different parts of campus from their own departments, that's fine too. The cost is $50 per site. We want as many administrators as possible to benefit from this program. You can download sheet about technology requirements here. If you have any questions about the program itself or how it will work, please contact 303-325-7831 or maxwell@hazingprevention.org. |
