The summer...
Box Tops for Education earns cash for our
technology center every time you buy groceries. It's very simple... 1. Clip Box Tops from hundreds of your favorite products found throughout your local grocery store. 2. Send in your collected Box Tops to school and place them in the Box Tops for Education Collection Box in the technology room .
That's it!
Each Box Top redeemed is worth a minimum 10 cents to Bay View Academy. The money earned for our school is used to provide your daughters with new educational learning tools in the technology center.
So, please, tell your family, friends, neighbors and co-workers to help you earn $$$ for St. Mary Academy Bay View.

Dear Parents,
My how the school year has flown by! We gathered this afternoon on the front lawn to enjoy a surprise treat from Del's lemonade and relax in the shade of the trees. The watermelon flavor was the hands down favorite. Our girls do love pink!
Summer vacation begins in a few short weeks and we will be busy here at the Bay. For the first time, we are offering two sessions of summer camp, one the week of June 14 and the other the week of June 21. We are delighted that so many families have taken advantage of this new program. The always popular session of Bible Camp will run July 12 - 16. Please contact Mrs. Grace in the school office if you are interested in having your daughter attend camp. There are a few openings available.
As you may know, Mrs. Patricia Faucher is retiring this June. We wish her a very relaxing retirement and many happy times with her grandchildren and her family. I am pleased to announce that Mrs. Janine Cooney will become the teacher for the four year old pre-kindergarten class. I know that you all join me in welcoming Mrs. Cooney to the Early Childhood Program.
We wish all of our families a safe, relaxing, and sunny summer vacation. We look forward to welcoming your daughters back to school in August and we pray for God's blessing upon our families who will be moving on.
Warm Regards, Cindy Lorincz Principal

Prayerful Song |
Bay View's "Elementary String Ensemble" has had a very busy year adding to their repertoires, composing and "fine tuning" their music and talent. They have shared their music with many people at nursing homes, at churches during the Christmas Season, and of course, here at Bay View at the school Masses, Christmas Concert, Grandparents' Day, The Passion Play, and the May Crowning. They will complete their year by sharing this gift of music by being a part of the 5th grade "Celebration Mass."
Throughout the year, as they rehearse, learn new music, share their music with others, and participate at Mass, they earn beads and build a rosary. This year, these young violinists completed a total of thirty nine rosaries. Many of the girls gave their rosaries to their mom, aunt or Godmother for Mother's Day, another as a birthday gift, and there will be a dad or two receiving a rosary for Father's Day. This is a most special gift. |

Over 65,000 Pennies and Still Counting

Many thanks to Dr. Ehsun Mirza and Dr. Saira Hussain for extending our all-school read, Listen to the Wind and Three Cups of Tea. The Mirza family visited our 4th and 5th graders to share personal knowledge of their native Pakistan. They brought a PowerPoint presentation, foods, clothing, currency, and henna! This presentation kicked off our Pennies for Peace drive, and our students are collecting pennies until June 4 to help pay for schools for girls in Pakistan and Afghanistan. We will also accept pennies when we return to school in August, so if you want to continue collecting your pennies over the summer, bring them back to school before September! |

Our Newest Mercy Associates

Congratulations to our newest Mercy Associates who made their commitment to Mercy through a formal covenant on Sunday, May 23rd in the Bay View Chapel...Ms. Julie Battista, Ms. Heather Cameron, and Mrs.Stacey Peterson. We are very proud to have these dedicated women as part of our faculty.
"Mercy Associates are women and men who hear and respond to a call from God - an invitation to Gospel holiness lived through sharing in the mission of Mercy. They desire to walk with and care for those who are poor, sick, and uneducated. Associates, while maintaining individual lifestyles, seek to embody the spirit of Mercy in partnership with the Community of the Sisters of Mercy through a mutual covenant. As identified by foundress Catherine McAuley, the mission of Mercy is central for Associates, who share in ministry, prayer, community and friendship." (Mercy Associate Identity Statement) |

Help Students Discover the World, One Book at a Time
|
Want to learn more about the Accelerated Reading program that we use here at Bay View? Check out this new web site: www.ARbookfind.com. Your public library also has a web site that you can access from home. You can request books using your home computer, books that are located at other public libraries throughout the state. Just pick them up at the library closest to your home or office. Also, check out the children's programs! Some are held in the evenings, to accomodate parents who work days. The large chain bookstores also have summer reading programs that your children can participate in.
Help them find a new favorite author or series this summer! |
Sprouts in Full Bloom |
The sprouts have been very busy learning about farms! We've learned about different farm animals, their characteristics, their babies and the foods farms provide us with. We even made butter...yum,yum!. We ended our unit with a fun trip to "Hidden Meadows Farm" where we saw baby pigs, cows, goats and chickens! We are on to hatching butterflies and then our end of the year celebration with our families. We've really "sprouted and bloomed" this year!

Home Sweet Home | |
By the time you read this little ditty, We will be with Lady Liberty in New York City. We enjoyed our travels and learned many things, But love the feeling that returning home brings.
One grandmother enthralled us with German tales, While another entertained us with music from Wales. In Poland we feasted on kielbasa and pierogis - such a treat, And created beautiful eggs, so dainty and sweet. In Romania we won "GOLD" on the balance beam with perfect scores of 10, And in England we had tea with the "Queen Mums" and admired Big Ben.
Now there's only one thing left to say - God Bless Our Home - the Good Old USA!

We're On Our Way...
First Grade, First Grade!

Start spreading the news.....we're leaving today....
we want to be a part of it...first grade, first grade...
Yes, our year is coming to an end. However, the learning in kindergarten continues...
We know our ABCs and our 1,2,3s so well...
We've worked at sounding out words...and stories to tell.
Just ask us to rhyme...we'll say tens and pens.
We've learned to share and get along with all our friends!
So now we've made it there...we'll make it anywhere...
We're on our way... first grade, first grade! |
Grade One - Oh What Fun! |
Magnets, a field trip, an ice cream party with Big Sisters, and more Cinderella stories from around the world - such a fun and exciting time for our grade one girls!
The field trip to Roger Williams Park Zoo with a focus on animal habitats was an educational experience that proved to be fun as well.
There was the visit from the "Mad Scientist" who was very impressed with all our knowledge about magnets. We enjoyed the fun way he presented hands on experiments for us to use the things we have learned about magnets.
What a wonderful way to end our year with our Big Sisters. We will enjoy ice cream and exchange small gifts and, most importantly, make a great memory of a worthwhile relationship.
We have enjoyed so many Cinderella stories and the girls look forward to each Friday and a new experience. I know they also look forward to sharing their book with all their book reports with their families.
This has been a wonderful year for me and the children. I wish you a very happy, restful, and healthy summer! |
Woven Webs of Friendships |
The second grade girls are finishing the year with reading and working on activities related to the wonderful, classic story of Charlotte's Web. As we read through the chapters, the girls answered comprehension questions, wrote in their literary response journals and crafted pigs, spiders and much, much more!
As we reached the middle of the story, the girls began working on an at-home project. They chose either to create a diorama resembling Zuckerman's farm or write a character report. We look forward to to seeing the results of their efforts during the first week of June. We will also celebrate the conclusion of the story with a "Charlotte's Web Picnic" before the school year ends!
Since we have now read about Wilbur and Charlotte's true friendship, we hope to be just as good to the friends we have in our lives! With that, I'd like to wish everyone a wonderful summer! See you next year!

Fourth Grade Is Ready to "Start The Party"
Fourth graders continue their busy year with the physical science investigations of electricity and magnetism. The girls enjoyed the movements of magnets as they caused them to dance around their desks, watching as the poles attracted and repelled each other. Lastly, the students just finished taking the Science NECAP (New England Common Assessment) test.
Students in both math classes participated in the second annual Bay View Family Fun Day held during Manhattan weekend. When asked to create math based "carnival games," they exceeded everyone's expectations and designed colorful, creative, informative, and challenging math games. The games were a big success at the fair and were designed to accommodate the different math abilities of the children who played them. These games will be further put to the test when fourth grade sponsors a "Math Morning" out on the front lawn. The entire school will get a chance to play these fun games on May 28.
As the end of the school year looms in front of us, the fourth grade authors are continuing the writing and illustrating of their keepsake creative writing books. A whirlwind of poetic activity is flying around both rooms as the girls strive to complete their anthologies in time for the literary luncheon and robotics demonstration on June 9. Come and watch the girls and their robots dance around the Wellness Center as they "Start the Party", and then enjoy the social studies flip books. These books offer a complete overview of the history, geography, and culture of the United States. The fourth grade will end the year with a visit to the historic Slater Mill and Rhode Island State House.
It has certainly been another electrifying year in fourth grade.

Going Green is Fashionable
On Earth Day (April 22), the second-annual Project Earth Day fashion show came to Bay View and was easily the hottest ticket in town. Grade five students hit the runway in an exclusive new style of fashion - outfits made entirely of recycled materials including newspaper, boxes, bottles, cans, and even nylon. The student models also presented cool fun-facts about recycling that they had researched in preparation for the fashion show. The innovative designs showed how Bay View's students really can, "Make it work!"

Spanish Fiesta Night | |
What a celebration! The fifth grade girls culminated their study of Spanish countries with a beautiful celebration of song, dance, language and culture. The setting in the Wellness Center added class and elegance to the 21 country displays. During the first part of the program, the girls demonstrated their ease in speaking and singing in Spanish and dancing to the rhythm of Spanish melodies. Several of the girls choreographed a dance routine to accompany our grand finale song.
The second part of the night, included a visit by family and friends to the country displays. Many commented how informative and delightful the different displays were. The girls, as hostesses, dressed in cultural clothing representing their country. The variety and taste of recipes the girls had found from their countries delighted everyone from young to old.
I want to thank the moms and dads, grandmas and grandpas for their support of the girls' projects. There is no way the evening would have been as successful had it not been for each of you. GRACIAS!

THUMBS UP for Bay View | |
This spring, all of the girls in the elementary school worked together on a community service project to help fellow Rhode Islanders. The project was kicked off in early April by Farris Maxwell from the RI Community Food Bank, who told the girls about the good work that the Food Bank does in Rhode Island and how the Bay View girls could help. The next day, every girl from Sprouts through fifth grade planted bush beans, snap peas or cucumbers in small peat pots. The girls proudly nurtured and grew their seedlings in their classrooms until they were ready for outside planting.
Recently, representatives from grades three, four and five took the plants to the Food Bank Community Garden in Bristol for planting. The girls worked diligently to plant all 189 plants, sow rows and rows of new seeds, and weed a new garden in preparation for future planting. It was dirty work but they loved it!
Volunteers will continue to care for the plants until they are ready to harvest. All produce from the garden will go to the RI Food Bank for distribution to families in need. Bay View families are invited to visit the garden this summer if they would like to volunteer their gardening skills! Contact information can be found at www.rifoodbank.org
