Upcoming Classes

The next Private Pilot Ground class will likely be scheduled in July. Attending the ground class is an excellent way to get started on your Private Pilot training. The class will run for 12 weeks, one session per week, and three hours per session. We are currently taking names from interested individuals and their preferences for which day of the week to meet. The cost will be $250.

Special Flight Training Opportunities

Trade Winds Aviation will be offering two great training opportunities over the next couple of months to build up you flying skills. Please consider taking advantage of one or both of these sessions.

Mountain Flying Class

We will offer a Mountain Flying class on Saturday June 18.  This class will be for pilots who have not had experience with high elevation airports and wish to learn more about high altitude operations. Successful completion of this class will earn the student a sign-off to allow use of Trade Winds Aviation airplanes at high altitude airports.

The class will consist of a morning ground session here at Trade Winds Aviation.  Once the ground session has completed we will get in the airplanes and head for Lake Tahoe (either north or south shore).  In the mountains we will practice takeoffs and landings as well as experience other mountain situations.

Each airplane in the class will have two students and one instructor.  This will allow the students to split the cost of the plane and instructor.  The cost of the flight will be billed on the normal hourly basis.  The cost of the ground instruction at Trade Winds Aviation will be $75 per person.

Please let us know as early as possible if you would like to attend the fun and informative class.  In years past the class has filled up quickly.

IFR Adventure Trip

Several years ago (before the Great Recession), we offered an "IFR Flying Adventure". Two pilots and one instructor made a multiple day journey across the American west and learned a lot about instrument flying.  Trade Winds Aviation is pleased to offer this exciting experience again this coming summer. The trip will be open to both current IFR rated pilots and IFR student pilots.

The purpose of the trip is primarily to gain real world experience in flying in IFR conditions.  On the morning of the departure we will look at the map and see where the worst weather is (within reason) and aim for it.  Once there we will fly in instrument conditions as much as possible.

However there are other side benefits to the trip.  For example, we will get to see some wonderful areas of the Western US.  We will learn how to prep for a trip where the ultimate destination may not be known.  We will learn how to use satellite weather as well as information from flight service and ATC to make informed weather decisions.  We will also insure that all pilots will receive an IPC by completing the flight.

A fixed day/week for this trip has not been finalized.  However sometime in June or July is most likely and will depend mostly on the pilot's (not instructor's) schedule. A trip planning meeting will be schedule prior to the start of the trip. If you are interested in this trip please contact Walt Gyger or our Dispatchers.

Fly-out gang on May 7, 2011
Fly-out News

On Saturday, May 7th six people took off in two airplanes for our monthly fly-out. The group headed to Charles M. Schultz - Sonoma County airport (STS) near Santa Rosa to visit the Pacific Coast Air Museum.  After parking at Sonoma Jet Center, we borrowed their courtesy car and drove the short distance to the museum. The museum was very nice. They have a good collection of late model military fighter jets. Afterwards we returned to the jet center, walked a short distance to the terminal building and ate a nice lunch at the Sky Lounge restaurant.

The next fly-out is scheduled for Saturday, June 6. We will be heading to the McClellan Airfield (MCC) near Sacramento to visit the Aerospace Museum of California

If you have questions about future our fly-outs or would like to sign up for one please contact Dispatch at (408) 729-5100 or  dispatch@tradewindsaviation.com
Friday Evening BBQs

Come join Trade Winds Aviation staff for our first summer time barbecue on Friday, June 17 starting at 5:00 PM. It will be a fun time to catch up with fellow flying enthusiasts. Ken Maples will share more details about the upcoming Mountain Flying Class and the IFR Adventure Trip, and answer your questions.

Looking For A Few Good Airplanes

We would like to add additional late model Cessna aircraft to our rental fleet. Specifically we are looking to add a C172 SP with either traditional or G1000 instrumentation and a C182 with traditional or G1000 instrumentation. If you are interested in owning such aircraft, have it managed by Trade Winds Aviation and earn income to offset the cost of ownership, then a leaseback arrangement is an excellent option for you. For more information please contact Walt Gyger, Flight School Manager, at 408-729-5100 or
