Book Spotlight: Beater by Brian W. Smith
Contemporary Fiction

Q. What motivated you to create this book now?
A. This book BEATER is my most personal book since my 2006 release, Mama's Lies - Daddy's Pain. Mainly because I grew up in a house filled with domestic violence. I can remember my father beating my mother down in the middle of the street. Domestic violence is real and the impact is long lasting - not just to the person being beaten, but to the kids.

Since the Chris Brown and Rihana incident, the topic has resurfaced; therefore, I felt it was finally time that I write this book. BEATER is a unique book because it addresses the issue of women physically abusing men. It forces reader to consider a very simple, yet difficult question: Is there ever a legitimate reason for a man to hit a woman.

Q: What was the most powerful chapter or scene in the book for you?
A. I believe there are several powerful chapters in this book. As a matter of fact, the Prologue of the book is extremely powerful - it describes an actual scene from my past. Someone who read an advance copy of the book actually called me crying after reading the Prologue.

Q: Do you write full time? Describe your writing schedule for our readers.

A. Yes, I write full-time. My writing schedule is unorthodox. I also own Hollygrove Publishing; therefore, I am wearing multiple hats (i.e., publisher, publicist, etc.). It is not uncommon to find me writing at three o'clock in the morning. I usually work on multiple books simultaneously. If I get "writer's block" while writing one book, I simply start working on one of my other books.

Q: What do you like to do when you're not writing?
A. When I am not writing I like to spend time with my family. I also like to spend time alone. This may sound rather boring to some people, but you can probably catch me in a coffee shop reading a self-improvement or business related book when I'm not working on one of my own fiction novels.

Q:  Share with us your latest news, awards or upcoming book releases.

A. I am working on several projects for 2010. I have my first Business/Motivational book coming out in the summer titled, "You Gotta Do "A" Work to Get "B" Credit"; I will be contributing to the next Hollygrove Publishing Erotica Anthology titled, "Bedtime Stories 3"; I am also writing the sequel to my best selling novel, "Nina's Got A Secret" - I haven't decided what the title will be at this point, but readers can expect that sequel in the fall of 2010.

I am also creating an on-line literary magazine called, "The Grove". The Inaugural Edition was released in January 2010. Readers can check me out on my website: www.hollygrovepublishing.com  and/or on Facebook.
