11:15 a.m. Registration

11:30 a.m. - 1:30 p.m.  Luncheon & Program

(last half hour reserved for networking)

Speaker: Ellen Didier, Red Sage Communications

[Huntsville, AL] - The WBCNA has partnered with the Chamber of Commerce of Huntsville-Madison County to present a Lunch & Learn session in July. The Lunch & Learn event will take place on Friday, July 15, 2011, from 11:30 a.m. until 1:30 p.m. The topic for July's Lunch & Learn is "Free (or almost free) Ways to Shamelessly Promote Your Business," and our speaker is Ellen Didier, Red Sage Communications.  The event is sponsored by Bancorp South.

If you are starting a small business or are already in business for yourself, marketing is absolutely key to attracting new business.  Yet, incredibly, many businesses seem to put the marketing budget in the, "spend on it if there is money left over at the end of the month" mentality.  This workshop is a down and dirty look at some of the many ways you can market your company without spending a lot of money.  From the traditional basics such as press releases to newer online strategies, learn about a wide range of low cost or no cost marketing tools you can use to drive visibility-and business-to your company.

The Lunch & Learn will be held at the Chamber of Commerce Auditorium at 225 Church Street in downtown Huntsville. A map with directions can be found on the website.

Reservations are required. The cost is $20 for WBCNA clients and Chamber members.  Please call 256-535-2038 for the discount code prior to registering online.  Cost for all others is $25. Credit card payment is required at the time of online registration.  Reservations can be made online via our calendar at  www.wbcna.org.

Registration/Cancellation Policy: Lunch registrations and/or cancellations must be received no later than 5 p.m. on Wednesday before the Lunch & Learn.  If you are unable to attend and do not cancel by the deadline, you will be responsible for payment.

BBB Alert Regarding Fraudulent Company Promoting a Women's Expo

Source: WHNT News 19

The Better Business Bureau of North Alabama (BBB) and the City of Huntsville's Police Department are alerting local businesses to Mobile, AL based Expositions & Festivals, Inc. (EFI) and the Alabama Women's Chamber of Commerce (ALWCC), which have been promoting a Women's Expo in Huntsville.  Expositions & Festivals, Inc. has an F rating from the BBB of Mobile due to 6 unresponded complaints, all of which were processed in the last 12 months.

Click here to read the entire story, as reported by WHNT News 19.

When considering the purchase of trade show booths, the BBB advises businesses to:

  • Check with the venue and confirm the time and location.
  • Research the host organization by reading its online BBB Business Review.
  • Get all details in writing. Carefully review the terms and conditions, as well as exhibitor options in case the event is canceled or rescheduled.
  • Find out if the event has been held before, and if so, ask to speak to other businesses that attended.
  • Consider paying for the event by credit card. If the services are not rendered as promised, it may be possible to dispute the charge through your credit card provider.
  • Be wary of any websites promoting trade show events that do not list the name and address of the trade show organizer or promoter.
  • Ask event organizers about add-on costs, such as fees for electricity and Internet hookup, tables and tablecloths and other charges that may not be included in the booth rental fees.
Governor signs Tax Reform Bills that Provide a Level Playing Field for Business

The Business Council of Alabama (BCA)  praised the Alabama Legislature for one of the most productive legislative sessions in history and for making job creation a top priority.

Pro-jobs legislation, which has been on BCA's agenda for nearly two decades, has been approved, and many of the items have already been signed into law by Gov. Robert Bentley.

"The new majority in the Legislature proved early on in the session that they were no longer willing to accept the status quo of the last 40 years," said BCA President and CEO William J. Canary. "Speaker Mike Hubbard and Senate Pro Tem Del Marsh led the charge to level the playing field for Alabama's business community in the Legislature, and we commend them for tackling tough budget issues, emphasizing job creation, and reforming education."

"This Legislature has sent a clear message to businesses looking to expand that Alabama's international reputation as a place to do business is strengthened even more," said William W. Brooke, chairman of the BCA Board of Directors and managing partner of Venture Capital for the Harbert Management Corporation. "Creating jobs is vital to revitalizing our state's economy, and the legislature has met this challenge head on."

Small Business

One of BCA's top-tier small business agenda items that made its way through the Legislature early this session was HB 61 sponsored by Rep. April Weaver, R-Brierfield, which provides small businesses a tax deduction in order to provide health insurance to their employees. This law allows qualifying employers and employees to deduct and additional 50 percent of the amount expended for health insurance premiums. Qualifying employers are those with less than 25 employees; qualifying employees are those whose annual wages do not exceed $50,000. The law now increases the 150 percent deduction, approved during the 2008 legislative session, to a deduction of 200 percent of qualifying premium payments. Gov. Robert Bentley signed this legislation into law on April 21.

Job Creation and Economic Development

BCA members proudly stood with Gov. Bentley on the steps of the State Capitol in late March as he announced his Full Employment Act. Sponsored by Rep. Blaine Galliher, R-Gadsden, and Sen. Arthur Orr, R-Decatur, HB 230 will provide businesses with 50 or fewer employees an income tax credit equal to $1,000 per new job paying more than $10 an hour. Once enacted, the tax credit will be available for the tax year during which the employee has completed 12 months of consecutive employment. The bill passed both houses unanimously and now awaits the governor's signature.

FREE Business Plan Review from WBCNA!

The WBCNA Business Plan Review Committee is comprised of bankers, entrepreneurs, lenders, accountants, and others who can review your business plan and offer suggestions on how to make it stronger.

The need for business planning and a business plan for a new venture cannot be overemphasized. It forces entrepreneurs to consider every facet of the business and places decisions on paper; where they can be evaluated and considered before getting started.

Writing a Business Plan can be a time-consuming task. Software programs or instruction manuals can assist you with preparing your plan, but it is still important to polish and perfect the document before submitting it to investors or lenders. The best way to refine a Business Plan is to have it reviewed by other business professionals who are accustomed to seeing and reviewing Business Plans.

WBCNA's Business Plan Review Committee will help you answer these important questions:
  • Is your business plan complete or are there missing components?
  • Have you thought through everything?
  • Is marketing sufficiently addressed?
  • Is the format readable and free of typographical and grammatical errors?
To learn how WBCNA can assist you with Business Plan review, please call 256-535-2038 or email info@wbcna.org.

Know Your Resources:  SBA Patriot Express Loan Overview

"Some of the most exciting small business successes in North Alabama belong to our Veterans," notes John Cook, AVP Business Services at Redstone Federal Credit Union (RFCU).  "Nothing makes our team more proud than to help a Veteran find the resources they need to start or to grow their business."

Cook and the team of business lenders at RFCU offer all entrepreneurs and business owners conventional loan products and specialized resources from the Small Business Administration (SBA).  But, they take special pride in assisting Veterans with lending tools such as the SBA Patriot Express program.  "Our Veterans have given our country the ultimate level of service," says Cook, "it is our privilege to come alongside them through the process of finding the best financial resources for their business."

RFCU assists the military community, including spouses, with the SBA Patriot Express Loan program.  The Credit Union provided the following overview of the program:

  • Requires business ownership of 51% or greater by an individual or individuals in one of more of the following groups:
    • Veterans (other than dishonorably discharged)
    • Service-Disabled Veterans
    • Active Duty Military service members
    • Reservists and National Guard members
    • Current spouses of any of the above
    • Widowed spouse of a service member or veteran who died during service
  • Patriot Express loans bear interest rates of between 2.25% to 4.75% over prime.  Fixed interest rates are also available. The specific rate offered depends upon underwriting criteria including risk, size of the loan as well as maturity.
  • As an SBA Resource Partner, RFCU places special emphasis on counseling and assistance to make this loan initiative as accessible as possible for Veterans.

"The Redstone Federal team is here to help," says Cook, "and we want to hear your story."  Cook added that Redstone's lending officers follow the success of their Veteran members for years.   "Raising awareness about this program is essential.  We want  Veterans in the Tennessee Valley to think of Redstone Federal as base camp - the first place to visit when they're ready to start their new venture or grow an existing one."

For additional questions regarding the Patriot Express Loan program, log on to RFCU's business services page by clicking here, or call (256)722-3407.
