HELPING SENIORS
Helping

Executive Director of Beacon of Hope, Tina Marquardt, and Sheriff Marlin N. Gusman welcome Ms. Josephine Journee home to Tricou Street in New Orleans.  Josephine is the first recipient of a new program established by Sheriff Marlin N. Gusman which distributes grant monies to help restore homes of senior citizens who fell victim to contractor fraud.

These grant opportunities will be disbursed through Helping Seniors Inc. for Senior Citizens whose application has been approved by the advisory committee which Beacon of Hope serves on. Evidence of actual fraud must be demonstrated and reported to the District Attorney's office prior to application review. Helping Seniors Inc. has partnered with local non-profit rebuild agencies such as Catholic Charities and Project Homecoming to help get these Seniors back in their homes. For more information on this program, call 504.826.7034.

BEACON MEETS WITH MIDDLE EASTERN DELEGATES
BeaconMeets

Beacon of Hope along with the New Orleans Citizen Diplomacy Council (NOCDC)  hosted 11 delegates from the Middle East whose program focuses on civic engagement. These visitors are working to bring about social and political change in their own countries. While in the U.S. they look forward to meeting  with their professional counterparts to explore new and innovative ways to involve their communities in the civic, political, and social process.  Executive Director, Tina Marquardt shared the Beacon model and described how ordinary citizens were able to make a big impact on the recovery of New Orleans simply by getting involved.

The NOCDC is a non-profit organization that arranges professional appointments and cultural activities for over 400 international leaders sent to New Orleans each year from the U.S. State Department International Visitor Leadership Program.

COMMUNITY GARDEN JUST THE BEGINNING
Garden

In a collaboration between The Beacon of Hope, Projects With Purpose and Kilpatrick and Associates, the community garden in the Filmore Gardens neighborhood has come to life! Volunteers planted 17 trees, created 10 raised beds, and planted an array of vegetables and herbs. The work would not have been possible without the onsite carpentry skill of local resident Mr. Joe Decuir and the pre project planning of Filmore Gardens Neighborhood leaders Gloria Decuir and Gwen Charles.

In addition to the garden, volunteers assisted 7 homeowners in the neighborhood with landscaping projects. Thank you to our volunteers for helping beautify the wonderful neighborhood of Filmore Gardens.

CITY OF NEW ORLEANS' "FIGHT THE BLIGHT" DAY

Blight
Beacon of Hope co-hosted the city's third "Fight the Blight" day in June. Volunteers rehabilitated the Union Playspot in Gentilly at the corner of St. Roch and Humanity. A lively, fresh coat of paint was applied to the perimeter of the park and the grounds and play areas were cleaned. NORD provided new picnic tables and trash receptacles.

The "Fight the Blight" campaign is one of several methods the Landrieu administration is using to eliminate blighted properties in NOLA. Focus is placed on a five block radius from city parks and play lots. Volunteers assist with a range of projects including litter abatement, strategic demolitions, grass-cutting, neighborhood beautification, code citing, and painting.

Visit the city's website for more info.

Mission:

Leading the way home, Beacon of Hope Resource Center provides a model for recovery in neighborhoods devastated by Hurricane Katrina, as well as other areas affected by disaster.  Providing information and resources, encouraging civic action, and fostering repopulation form the foundation on which we build and grow.  Beacon of Hope empowers residents to facilitate their own recovery while providing a hub of resident driven activities and a safe environment to create the synergy essential for restoring viable neighborhoods and improve the overall quality of life for residents.

Sincerely,
