Harrah's Awards Beacon of Hope
Harrah's Check Presentation

In honor of the 5th anniversary of Katrina this August, Harrah's has granted Beacon of Hope $20,ooo to continue to provide assistance to recovering neighborhoods.  With the help from Harrah's generous donation, Beacon of Hope has been able to accomplish much in the two months since the award was given.  In the Neighborhood Development Department, staff have led six trainings educating 39 neighborhood leaders on best practices in blight eradication and community recovery.  The Volunteer Department has been able to host 189 volunteers who have worked on 19 projects throughout Gentilly, totaling $21,600.00 worth of services.  Click here to see a map of the projects completed by Beacon volunteers in September.

Harrah's Employees Volunteer!

harrah's heroesIn addition to grant money, Harrah's employees came out for a day of volunteering with Beacon of Hope through the HERO (Harrah's Entertainment Reaching Out) program.  They worked on landscaping projects at three homes in Gentilly.

We thank Harrah's for their donation and continued support in the process of neighborhood organizing and recovery!

Mayor Landrieu's New Plan to Fight Blight Includes Resident Data Collection
Mayor Landrieu at the demolition of 2841 Danneel St in Central City, from the Times Picayune
mayor's demolition

In late September, Mayor Mitch Landrieu announced the City's new plan of action to reduce the amount of blighted properties in New Orleans.  The strategies outlined in the Mayor's plan came out of a collaboration between City officials and staff, non-profit organizations, community members and urban blight experts from across the country.

Beacon of Hope is especially excited to see included in the comprehensive strategy the importance of resident-collected blight data to help inform city agencies of conditions in each community.  In the months to come, City officials and non-profit agencies will work to develop a city-wide resident data collection system that will streamline the process of blight reporting and reduction.

Read the full Press Release on the blight reduction strategy (plus, check out the City's NEW website at www.nola.gov!).
The Ladies of Beacon of Hope Help Rebuild
and Encourage Local Volunteering

The women on staff at Beacon of Hope donned their long-sleeved Beacon t-shirts and jeans on Tuesday to participate in St. Bernard Project's "Women's Rebuild," a week-long series of projects completed by women volunteers.  The Beacon ladies happily teamed up with two women from the Krewe of Muses to install insulation in a house in the 7th Ward.

Women's Rebuild highlights the power that women bring to the rebuilding process.  The Beacon of Hope ladies were excited to tap into that power while simultaneously encouraging a more local base of volunteers.  New Orleans has been blessed with the amount of volunteer groups coming from all around the country to help rebuild our city, but projects like SBP's Women's Rebuild remind us that it is equally important to engage local volunteers.

The Beacon of Hope would like to challenge local residents, business and social groups to continue to help the recovery process by volunteering with us!  Schedule your day of service with us now!  If you are a resident in need, find out how to request volunteers for a project at your home.women's rebuild logo

Mission:

Leading the way home, Beacon of Hope Resource Center provides a model for recovery in neighborhoods devastated by Hurricane Katrina, as well as other areas affected by disaster.  Providing information and resources, encouraging civic action, and fostering repopulation form the foundation on which we build and grow.  Beacon of Hope empowers residents to facilitate their own recovery while providing a hub of resident driven activities and a safe environment to create the synergy essential for restoring viable neighborhoods and improve the overall quality of life for residents.
