Dear Friend of the Beacon of Hope Resource Center,
How do Beacon of Hope Resource Center's volunteers affect the residents of New Orleans? Check out this article:

"Gifts from the heart
make house a home"
By Letters to the Editor- Times-Picayune
January 04, 2010,
5:10AM Why was a gargantuan Florida Gator bus cruising down Mirabeau
Avenue, stopping in Gentilly Terrace at my house? People came pouring
out, ready to work scraping, priming and painting my house. They were
not bringing gold, frankincense and myrrh, but something much more
valuable -- their time, their "elbow grease" and their big hearts.
In smaller vans and cars, I also had volunteers from St. Louis,
Boston and Chattanooga who all worked hard to make my home a beautiful
place. Teenagers came with these groups, and let me tell you, they are
role models for us all. To give up Christmas vacation to help people
gives me hope that this generation of teens will bring significant,
positive change.
There were others before them, and each of these groups were here
because of the Beacon of Hope, a grass roots organization based in
Gentilly, helping homeowners in this area. What dedicated people! I
cannot thank them enough for the great work they are doing, and in
particular, for the amazing transformation of my house, which no longer
is the ugly duckling of the block!
Ask me how do I feel: If I stepped out of my body, I would burst
into blossoms! To all of the aforementioned, may 2010 be in some way
magical for you.
Beverly Guidry Jimenez Gentilly, New Orleans With the beginning of this new year upon us, please consider planning to come to volunteer. Currently we have over 250 people just like Beverly who need your help. If you are interested please click here for more information. If you cannot volunteer with us this year, please consider making a charitable donation to the Beacon of Hope Resource Center. Thank you for helping transform ugly ducklings into swans, The Beacon of Hope Resource Center

Beacon assists the Phoenix of New Orleans
During the week of December 7th, 2009
the Phoenix of New Orleans, a local recovery agency, discovered that their
warehouse had been broken into and equipment had been stolen. The loss put a strain on there efforts to continue helping get homeowners back
in there homes. A cry went out for help and Beacon looked to answer the call. In a teleconference Beacon of Hope learned of Phoenix's efforts to get a family back in their
home before Christmas. The story and their plight touched our organization so much that we had to act. On December 10, the Beacon of Hope delivered a brand new 3600 Watt generator to the Phoenix of New Orleans. In addition, Beacon loaned other tools and equipment until Pheonix was able to replace theirs. With our help, Demetra Henderson and her family were able to move into their finished Ninth Ward home in time for Christmas.

New Orleans City Council ready to hire back blight officers fired by mayor By David Hammer, The Times-Picayune
January 04, 2010, 1:25PM
Saying that restoring blight enforcement hearings is their top
remaining priority, a City Council committee suggested that the full
council take the unique step of hiring back administrative hearing
officers recently fired by Mayor Ray Nagin. Council President Arnie Fielkow suggested Monday that the council put
out its own request for proposals to law firms and spend $80,000 from
its budget to rehire blight officers.
Connie Uddo of Beacon of Hope,
a community group that promotes rebuilding in Lakeview and Gentilly,
said that even when blight hearings don't yield fines, they can help
nonprofits get information to derelict homeowners about how to hire
grass-cutters or do other things to bring their properties into
compliance.

Rebuilding
Together and the Beacon of Hope Assist Sugar Hill Family Rebuild Their Brother's
Home
Last
summer we asked our Gentilly Beacon Administrators to distribute flyers in their neighborhoods to inform residents of
the services offered by one of Beacon's service partners, Rebuilding Together
New Orleans.
Debra Joseph, the Beacon Administrator for the Sugar Hill Beacon, realized
when she picked up the flyers to be distributed that her brother qualified for
Rebuilding Together's program. After the storm her brother's health began to decline. He had both legs amputated due to diabetes, and then was moved into a
nursing home. His family exhausted the resources for rebuilding his home to pay off his mortgage and to assist with his medical costs,
and therefore was not able to finish his home.
Debra
applied on behalf of her brother, and Rebuilding Together accepted him as a qualified applicant.
"My
Brother and I have been truly blessed with the support from Beacon of Hope and
Rebuilding Together New Orleans," said Debra Josesph. "We also have been blessed by the
contribution of time and talent provided from all the volunteers that assisted
in the rebuilding of my brothers home located at 3132 St. Anthony Ave."
