SHRM Takes a Day to Help Rebuild New Orleans
SHRM Volunteers 1Note: Beacon of Hope Resource Center hosted over 125 Volunteers from the Society for Human Resource Management Conference on the weekend of June 27 -28, 2009.   The volunteers planted 140 trees and shrubs along St. Roch in Gentilly Terrace and Gardens.  They also assisted 25 homeowners in completing the repairs to their homes.

On Sunday June 28, 2009, Doyle "Trumpet Red" Cooper, a third year student of the Tipitina's Foundation, was on his way to a recital, when he noticed the SHRM volunteers working in his neighborhood.  He proceeded to give these volunteers an impromptu performance in appreciation for what the volunteers were doing for his neighborhood.  His mom, Leslie Cooper accompanied him on the tambourine.  A picture of their performance is below.

Below is an article written by Rick Bell about the project for www.workforce.com.

As the noontime temperatures in New Orleans soared into the low 90s, the 75 or so SHRM members participating in Saturday's 'Voluntourism' event didn't wilt. SHRM volunteers laid sod and planted dozens of oleanders and trees.

Doyle Cooper Playing the trumpetDozens of boxed lunches sat on air-conditioned buses as the noontime temperatures in New Orleans soared into the low 90s, but for a portion of the 75 or so SHRM members participating in Saturday's "Voluntourism" event, Martinez McConduit was serving up plates of red beans and rice and bowlfuls of gumbo inside her red-brick home.
The 81-year-old great-grandmother said serving up a down-home meal was her way of giving back to the dozens of SHRM Volunteers 2SHRM volunteers who were helping to rebuild her Gentilly Terrace neighborhood.
"These people are here to help me and my neighbors," she said between posing for pictures with the SHRM members who arrived before the 61st Annual SHRM Conference & Exposition officially opens Sunday afternoon just to participate in the Voluntourism event. Another group of SHRM volunteers will participate Sunday morning.
